99.9% of people are idiots. Fortunately, I belong to the 1% of intelligent people
> memory, verbal fluency, fluid reasoning and numerical reasoning, were correlated with how people decided to vote.
Apart from memory, the rest have a high correlation with levels of education, and therefore wealth/class.
Which is not a surprise, as generally remainers were middle class and suffered no side affects from EU membership – only benefits – whereas the working class saw little benefits and large parts of society were actively harmed by it.
I’m not saying that Brexit was anything close to a smart decision but this is kind of a broad brush stroke, don’t you think?
how about papers obsessed with brexit?
Facts
> Here is a scientific study showing people who politically disagree with me are stupid
I hate this new trend, besides how easy to manipulate it is this kind of “reserch” has no real purpose. It only divides people and makes mockery of real science
This is called pseudoscience. Even as far back as the 1960s, scientists have been pressured to alter reports based on various political beliefs (often in favor of left-wing views).
In other news, water is wet.
another one of these propaganda “oh if you’re not on my side science says you’re dumb” posts
Funny how this isn’t perceived as hate speech or anything even similar . I remember when IQ tests were conducted in male vs female populations, or with division by race. We don’t have to those anymore, because they were often use to create some negative stereotypes.
Yet for election this is always good to discuss. While I don’t mind statistical studies such articles will almost always create bias that if you voted for X.Y.Z politician or policy you must be stupid.
Less intelligent people are easier to manipulate and trapped in populistic rhetoric, no shit Sherlock.
This did not need a study, populismo (the promise of simple solutions to complex problems) is most effective on those who do not engage in critical thought.
Wanna always vote smart? Look at what Russia wants you to vote for and do the opposite.
Even if that’s the case, couldn’t this be them recognizing their interests and voting on it? Depending on your social class, career, educational attainment, and desired lifestyle, certain policies are more attractive. The EU has plenty of pros, but their are some cons that may well accumulate towards the lower class. The issues of excess Eu migrants were real, even if the post Brexit commonwealth deluge is worse
It doesn’t matter. Parties wanting to pursue an exit from the EU (and also coincidentally stall the shift to homegrown renewable energy sources) have spent a suspicious amount of time with and received a suspicious amount of money from Russian-linked sources. Leave parties get bank rolled by Russia, its not a surprise that everything these parties stand for helps Russia.
The world needs to wake up to the scale of Russian vote/media manipulation and interference.
I think this has the cause and effect mixed. Less intelligent are more likely to be brexiteers, that sounds more plausible.
The “study claims” buffoonery never ceases to amaze me.
I am a EU citizen and can’t care less about Brexit. However (as chatGPT would say), I question the interest and objectivity as such poll: did they ask people if they had voted Brexit, then made them a IQ test? (- and yes – I have read the article, thanks).
I can’t even see the point, other than enraging about Brexit or telling Brexiters are stupid. Would I have voted for Brexit? No. Do I understand the brexiters? I understand that they voted for it maily because they voted against immigration and were fooled into believing that EU sabotages the UK economy by its restrictions. I strongly support the first concern, even if it was clear that Brexit won’t stop immigration. I seriously doubt about the second, but time will tell and we need decades to see if Brexit was a good idea or not. But telling brexiters were stupid? Naaah it’s like saying “don’t give right to vote in countries with uneducated voters, they’ll vote for extremists.” But that’s racism, man! Brexiters voted for what they thought it represents their interests. It is an insult to call them “less intelligent”. “Less intelligent” people’s vote weights as much as “more inteligent” people’s one, this is the rule of democracy. There is nothing to discuss.
As a Brexit supporter, I find it offensive that this study suggests we’re less intelligent. Intelligence is not determined by political beliefs, and this kind of divisive rhetoric only serves to deepen societal divides. Let’s focus on constructive dialogue rather than resorting to baseless attacks.
They are no less intelligent, they are gullible to new ideas. Many people do not realize that voting behavior can significantly change the future, sometimes very difficult to reverse.
Something like “less educated” would have been interesting.
But the use of the world “intelligent” is a clear proof that this study was biased. Good scientists will never use such a vague word with strong connotations.
Like anyone else especially outside of the UK, I think the Brexit was a stupid decision and that British people were victims of propaganda. But it doesn’t mean that scientists should be on the same level as the public.
Social sciences are such a joke nowadays.
Wow that’s pretty interesting, what is also pretty interesting is that the people at the Nuremberg trials were also pretty smart and loved to everyone how much smarter they were.
The study: “Everyone is stupid except me”
Already posted this in r/scottland but I’ll post it again.
I actually read the study from the University of Bath that this story is referencing. What the study actually found was that people who are less capable of critical thinking and challenging information that they hear were more likely to vote Leave. Which makes a lot of sense because much of the leave campaign was based around lies and contradictory information so if you’re critical thinking is better you’re more likely to be able to see through these lies. The study admits itself that there is no clear divide between “dumb” and “smart” in votership, just that there is some correlation between lack of critical thinking and voting leave.
I will also add on top my previous information that they did isolate for wealth and socioeconomic background and still found this trend. You can have someone who is “less educated” who still have very strong critical reasoning and problem solving skills, this is not an exclusive skill to those who have attended University.
But are the no brexit voters still intelligent enough ?
We didn’t need a study for this one xD
I did a study this morning and determined that people who are pro EU are more likely to be gay and smelly and I hate them.
Glad we could discuss our theses.
I personally think Brexit showed peoples vulnerability against internet.
It’s pretty known Brexit it’s been a boomers victory. Boomers are those with no defence against internet propaganda. They are brexiters, novax and so on.
Starting to use Reddit, I realized younger generation (I’m a gen x) then my one are better than us (and way better then the boomers), to understand what’s going on true the internet.
“Study claims that stupid people are more likely to make stupid decisions”
Did we need a study to figure it out?
No shit Sherlock.
I wonder what the reasoning for the study was. Something like: “Oh, we personally don’t agree with Brexit voters. They must be stupid. Let’s find out.”
Well shit!
Democracy is the least worst option.
The problem with those studies is that even if right they are condensending by nature and will lead to nothing but more anger with the alleged population that will go more extreme or will not change
The most successful, intelligent person I know voted Leave. So did the most stupid and unsuccessful.
It would be nice if any of the links in the article actually worked, rather than linking to other random Independent articles
These sort of studies can be abstracted to “People with <INSERT_POLITICAL_OPINION_HERE> are stupid”. And the problem with this is, the political consensus and the people wielding political power dictate what political opinion gets inserted.
Right now it’s “Brexit voters are stupid” but what do you think it’s going to be a few years from now if the right wing parties continue to gain momentum? How will you start feeling when titles like “Deportation opponents are stupid” or “Climate protesters are less intelligent” will be making the rounds?
Maybe political discussion shouldn’t devolve to calling opponents stupid. When you think about your political opponents as stupid you think of them as lesser beings. Not fully human perhaps. And once you start thinking about them like that, all kinds of things can start happening.
This btw is coming from a Euro federalist who thinks Brexit was indeed a very stupid thing to do and who thinks the UK Parliament, which is sovereign and not bound by referendums should just vote to rejoin.
That’s a real shocker.
Condescending much, remember when people said they’d had enough of experts and then said experts present this, what a waste of money.
Aka people that the state is failing to properly educate
At least Brits don’t depend on the vote of some Hungarian in the parliament lol
People who believe these studies likely to be less intelligent study suggests
For clarity I voted remain.
There is a massive problem with this that studies like this fail to address and that’s the brain drain effect. They point to the fact that the regions that vote the most to leave have the lowest level of people there with degrees. However one of the reasons the levels of people with degrees are low in these areas is a lack of graduate level jobs.
So what happens is people in these areas leave school, move away to go to university, get a degree then find they have to move to London, M4 corridor etc, pretty much the areas that voted highest to remain, in order to find graduate level work.
Therefore merely saying that areas where more people have degrees voted remain means that remain voters are more intelligent and more likely to vote remain purely because they have degrees is not necessarily the case.
As for intelligence, the mere fact of having a degree doesn’t mean you’re intelligent, it merely means you’re good (and that may not even be the case) in the one thing you studied. The pass mark for degrees in the UK is extremely low, 40%. When I was at university doing a BEng degree a decade ago they openly stated that if you were below that by a few percent then as long as you had good attendance they’d up the mark. 40% in any other area would be seen as a fail, how can you be deemed to be competent in something if you can’t even achieve 50%? 60% is a commendation and 70% is a distinction in a degree in the UK, every industry certification I’ve ever done such as Microsoft certifications for my MCSE, has had a minimum pass mark of 85%.
