Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez says Madrid could recognize an independent Palestinian state even if the European Union does not.

  1. What about recognizing Catalunya, Galicia and the Basque Country?

  2. Does Spain recognise the independence of Kosovo these days?

  3. EU countries can have their independent foreign policies. The surprising thing is when people get a surprised pikachu face for this.

  4. Good, recognize them. I hope the entire world does. A Palestinian state in Gaza. Recognize Hamas as their government and military, while you’re at it.

And maybe then bring them in front of the ICC whenever they murder and rape Palestinians and Israelis.

    That’s how it works, right?

  5. Why does Spain have such a boner for Muslims? Common heritage?

  6. Spain’s policy on this has always been the two states solution… and right now there is only one recognised. It’s only logic for Spain to recognise Palestine.

Also and even more important the Spanish Parliament approved in 2014 recognising the Palestinian State with only a couple votes against it (pretty much unanimity) but the government didn’t go with it, waiting for a EU position on this regard.

  7. Let’s wait until Palestine can form a democratic secular government before we go about handing out sovereignty to Iran 2.0

  8. Don’t a majority of the world’s nations already recognize Palestine and have a stated preference for a 2-state solution? This doesn’t seem particularly radical nor unusual, several EU nations already recognize Palestine like Sweden and Poland. Don’t see why people here are flipping out about it.

  9. That’s just talk. Spain will probably never recognize Palestine and they’ll never never recognize Kosovo, because it’ll mean they’ll have to allow and recognize a Catalunya independence referendum.

  10. I don’t know. To me this seems totally bad timing just weeks after the biggist massacre of jews since the holocaust. Really gives the impression that terrorism DOES work.

  11. Good for him. Rare occasion in life when one feels proud for his country.

  12. It would be good start if palestine would recognize independent palestine cuz at the moment it’s quite dependent from hamas and iran.

  13. Spain will recognize the state, controlled by Hamas, then attempt to hide behind empty condemnations of Hamas. Because, ultimately, Spain supports Hamas terrorism.

  14. I’m surprised by all these countries not recognizing Palestine already, how did that happen, why? /Swedish

  15. As far I know, most EU countries would. Hamas/ Palestine government doesn’t accept any state form that allows Israel to exist.

  16. Yeah, they should. In the same way that they should recognise Kosovo and Taiwan. But he never will, as is to be expected, because the pressure to recognise Palestine most likely comes from Sumar, one of his coalition partners and the most left wing major party in Spain. Often, the most pro-Palestinian voices on the left tend to be “anti-imperialist”, meaning they are hypocrites and hate Israel for being “imperialist” but support Russia in invading Ukraine. Don’t believe me? Sumar members have stated in the past they support cutting aid to Ukraine and forcing them to negotiate with Russia. Lawmakers affiliated with Sumar have also rejected resolutions calling for free elections and the release of political prisoners in Cuba and Venezuela. Why? Because they like authoritarian asshole states when they are socialist is any capacity.

  17. He promised to do it in 2015… he has only been in power for 5 years, he hasn’t had time yet it seems.

I think that just as Russia pushed several countries to join NATO with the invasion of Ukraine, Israel is pushing several countries to recognize Palestine.
