Ukraine’s top party official Davyd Arakhamia confirming that Russia was agreeing to withdraw troops in exchange for Ukraine’s neutrality in March 2022 and that it was Boris Johnson who talked Ukraine out of it

1. “During negotiations with Ukraine in the spring of 2022, Russia proposed to withdraw its troops from the country in exchange for neutrality. Ukraine rejected this idea following a visit by Boris Johnson.

   David Arakhamia, the leader of the “Servant of the People” faction who participated in these negotiations, mentioned this in an interview with journalist Natalya Moseychuk. “They were ready to end the war if we were like Finland, not joining NATO. That was the key point, everything else was just cosmetic additions,” the politician said.

   According to Arakhamia, this was impossible for two reasons. “Firstly, to agree to this point, it was necessary to change the Constitution. Our path to NATO is written in the Constitution. Secondly, there was and is no trust in the Russians that they would do everything. This could be done if there were security guarantees. They came in unprepared and could leave and then enter prepared. There is no confidence that this wouldn’t have happened.”

   Later, the then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson came to Kyiv and said that there was no need to sign anything with Russia, and instead, “we need to fight.” Arakhamia also confirmed that the goal of the Ukrainian delegation during the negotiations was to prolong the process. Previously, Russian officials mentioned a similar development of events, noting that Ukraine was ready to sign a peace agreement before being persuaded otherwise by Western partners.”

2. If this is true, this is the best decision ever made and useless Boris might not be that useless after all.

5. I have no basis to believe that pootin would have kept his end of any withdrawal deal. All of these people are sophisticated people capable of making their own decisions with or without BoJo. Zelenskyy is capable of making up his own mind and acting on the advice of his own advisors. Having said that, I believe that BoJo advocated the right course of action.

6. Let’s not forget up until the day of the full scale invasion Putin said they weren’t going to invade. Given that track record, why would Putin’s promise of withdrawing be seen as suddenly sincere right at the time of his army getting pounded and withdrawing from Kyiv? Any logical person would just see this as just a way to gain time to regroup. Add the unveiling of the horrific atrocities of Bucha, Ukraine sentiment as they beat the Kremlin forces back would not be in “let’s make an agreement” mode. Boris’ involvement is just a Putin talking point.

No, Boris Johnson did not “talk Ukraine out of it.” The neutrality the headline refers to means not joining NATO, and Ukraine’s decision to join NATO had already been laid out in a constitutional amendment adopted three years earlier. Putin was demanding that Ukraine revert this amendment and trust him to keep his part of the deal. Their answer wasn’t no because of anything Johnson said, it was they weren’t dumb enough to trust Putin.

I remember a video early in 2022 in which Zelensky himself pledges to quit all intentions of joining NATO and even to cede the occupied south portion of Ukraine to Russia if Putin stop marching towards Kyiv. This was an official press release, he did not expressed a personal opinion, he was officially making these concessions.

    The guy was so scared and desperate of losing the capital that he literally was kneeing to the invasions, begging to his country to be spared.

    I highly doubt Putin proposed to leave Ukraine in any moment, let alone in March 2022 where they stepped into it so confidently they would take Kyiv so easily.
