  1. Like most commenters I’m not gonna read that, but honestly, were I seeking refugee status anywhere and could get away as a kid for extra anything, I’d fucking do it.

    With Boris and his bunch of bastards leaving people to drown in the middle of the sea, what do they have to lose?

  3. Pointing the finger at Brexit here. We’ve lost the EU’s country assignment procedure, meaning that we’ve got no choice but to take them in. That said, some incredibly “kind-hearted” people would go lengths to defend the asylum seekers who’ve lied about their age on grounds of endless humanitarianism, which is not pragmatic regardless of how you spin the rhetoric.

  5. I’ve seen it. 17 year olds who are working and don’t look 17 at all and you get to know them and they tell you their real age and maybe even that they’re a university graduate back home. Must be awkward lying about your age if there’s a big discrepancy, like if they’re at counselling or going for fully above board jobs.

    I’ve also seen the Daily Mail articles where they’re like “he has stubble, he can’t be 15!”, not realising not everyone has the same genetics.

    There’s a lot of scamming going on it society by all sorts of people (including those with relatively comfortable lives), this is nothing unique to refugees and maybe I’d do the same thing. Hell, I think a lot of people if they could would lie about their age to get better mental health or dental treatment. It’s up to the government to narrow the loophole and catch people (which it looks like they are, in Kent), hard for me to be angry at the refugees themselves when there’s much bigger scams and corruption going on affecting the country way more.

  6. As always, this sub seems unable to handle the fact that two things can be true at the same time. These people have clearly had it rough, but lying about your age to exploit the system intended to help the truly vulnerable is still a shitty thing to do. It also potentially puts UK kids at risk by introducing adults into their schools and friendship groups.

    The people intent on painting all asylum seekers as angels are just as annoying as the people that paint them all as opportunists.

    Totally unsurprised that some are lying about their age.

    These are, by definition and with good reason, desperate people.

    I won’t be accepting the Mail’s numbers on this though. They are just as, if not more, likely to make stuff up. Although I won’t be clicking their link to encourage more of this nonsense.

    The sorts of people likely to read and share this are those that are likely to want to believe it. As is the case with OP.

    Isn’t this a bit paradoxial? Tougher border controls and the xebophobia coming from the devil at the Home Office sound as if they are pushing people to lie and attempt to get special priviledges because the system is so set against them and hostile. Make the systems more welcoming, easier at all border entries, and people may not feel the need to lie. If things are more welcoming and less hostile, people may also be more willing to come forward with more checks on their ages.

  9. Seems to me there’s a simple solution to this: stop trying to make it so difficult for people to claim asylum.

    If you’re trying to start a new life in another country, it really doesn’t make sense to not want to be able to use your skills and qualifications getting started here…

    Unless of course you’re coming to a country where Priti Patel, sponsored by right wing cunts and the Daily Mail, make it increasingly difficult for you, and claiming to be a child means you might not be sent back to some hell hole.

    OP, you really don’t come across as the sharpest tool in the box with your surprise Pikachu face over desperate people choosing the path of least resistance in getting to stay in the UK.

    If you think that in their position you wouldn’t lie the same in order to start a new life… Well, you’re either a liar or in complete ignorance/denial about what these people are fleeing… Like most Daily Mail readers to be fair.
