Parisians living near the Seine will be forced to register online if they want to have friends over to watch the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games from their windows, as part of a major security lockdown.
The security measures planned for areas surrounding the river, the centrepiece of next year’s event, include residents having to present QR codes to access their own streets.
The July 26 opening ceremony, the first to ever take place outside of a stadium, will feature athletes sailing down the waterway on barges.
Up to 400,000 spectators are expected to line the upper quays of the river for the festivities, which will be free to the public.
In a bid to keep the area secure, authorities plan to carry out checks on residents, businesses and tourists alike.
Laurent Nuñez, the Paris police chief, told the Le Parisien newspaper that anybody keen to shop or dine within a security perimeter surrounding the river during the opening ceremony would have to register ahead of time on a dedicated online platform set to launch next spring.
Residents and business owners will also have to present QR codes to authorities at designated security stops to prove they live and work in the area.
“The principle is to leave it open. But yes, you will have to justify the fact that you are entering the perimeter to go to a restaurant and, therefore, there will necessarily be a registration on the platform,” Mr Nuñez said.
I know that it’s a result of me prematurely adopting a mindset tuned to a reality that isn’t quite here yet and that it will be completely incomprehensible to people not anticipating this paradigm shift, but it feels weird to me that we’re still doing the Olympics.
Wow, that opening ceremony sounds insanely good. Hope they can pull it off.
This sounds pretty authoritarian to me. I can’t imagine having to register with the police and present a QR code just to be allowed on to walk my own street, bring friends home or go to a restaurant.
It sounds like some kind of millitary green zone, or something out of a Chinese COVID lockdown, not security for a public event.
What we’ve come to accept.
London obviously also had the most major security it had probably ever seen. Down to military activity. Helicopter carrier on the river etc. I saw a couple of curious army vehicles too a few weeks before. Looked like special forces but what would I know.
Actually on the streets when the olympics happened it was all really low key though. I couldn’t tell much of a difference.
It was my favourite time in London ever. Fantastic vibe everywhere. Really chilled out and public transport coped fine. Fond memories.
I hope it’s the same for the Parisians.
Finally something to deal with the famous “No-Go Zones” of Paris. I will finally feel protected.
