So, in my 40s, no points or convictions, only ever had one accident 8 years ago, minor damage. Been driving since I was 18, reasonable job, live in a low crime area, driving a 13 year old BMW with 120k miles. Was with Tesco car insurance, they just sent me a renewal quote doubling my premium. Tried to shop around on all the usual comparison sites and I am getting quotes all in the £800-900 range. (Image is from direct line). Seems insane as I was paying a quarter of this a couple years ago. I’ve heard others report similar increases. Can anyone suggest an insurer who isn’t sticking the hand in??!

Looks like it’s your turn
I work in insurance, this is *everyone,* nobody is happy about it, especially brokers
Car insurance has always been one big money racket & insurance companies have the best business model going – their service is compulsory under law, to the extent that police will actively pursue you for any discrepancy. It’s basically a tax and one which is unfairly set, to my mind, without any government regulation. And where does it all go? In the pockets of shareholders.
Would really love if someone who works in the industry could explain why the recent jump in premiums? Mine has essentially trebled (granted I changed car mid-policy to a group 40).
I also struggle to get my head round why some people’s premiums are increasing even when they’re not at fault? I’ve also heard that your premium may increase if you’re named on someone else’s policy and they’re involved in a claim! Ridiculous!
My insurance automatically renews and doubled this year. I phoned them and pretended I didn’t know it was happening all over the place. Offended customer shtick. Got it dropped down a good bit but still not as low as it was. Wasn’t as high as your’s even when doubled.
Hastings. If you’re wondering.
I have stuck with Hughes for 5 years, renewed in June 03 for a £90 increase on previous year. I had shopped around online and they were only £70 more than the cheapest online quote.
Insurance companies, banks, estate agents. The unholy Trinity
I also think there are certain groups which insurers just don’t want to work with anymore.
I’m in my mid 20s and was with Admiral, no changes to anything over the year. They sent me the renewal which was 3x what I was paying £300 up to £950 and when I asked about it they knocked £20 off. I don’t think they wanted the business at all.
Got my renewal today. 60% increase.
Late 30’s, no accidents, 10 years NCB.
An 18 year old driver at my work just forked out 3700 for his first year driving a 1.6 focus. Desperately trying to keep young drivers off the roads these days
I thought my insurance was fine at about £860 for a Toyota Aygo for a newish driver, granted I do have a black box so that probably punts the piece down a bit
See if you can get a black box, that will lower it. My insurance doubled this year and they wanted 1350 a year or 125 a month. Told them where to stick it and found a cheaper insurers but had to get a black box as a compromise (I am under 25 though)
I’m into my third year of driving, and starting my second year of driving with my own policy in a week. Last year I paid £1,140. Next week I’ll be paying £1,390. No accidents or claims. I know I’m a young (20) male driver, but the price of insurance really does feel unfair at times.
Labour has went up
Parts have went up
Thus, premiums have to go up to cover increased claim amounts.
Tesco did the same to me and I complained. They offered a 5% discount pretty quickly.
Mines 156 quid a month
Electric cars cost a fortune to fix, everyone else has to make up the difference.
