A forgotten product: The glass that was almost indestructable – The story of ‘Superfest’, an extremely durable, East-German drinking glass that was too durable

  1. I actually met the inventor last year, since he lives in the village my grandfather grew up in. He had prepared an exhibition in the village church about the history of said village, and my late grandfather’s archives were a major source of information.

    Very intersting story indeed.

  2. > the country on the edge of the soviet union

::cough:: It may have been on the edge of the Warsaw Pact bloc, but between it and the Soviet Union lay, despite Hitler’s best efforts, an entire country: Poland.

But an interesting story nevertheless. I never, until now, knew I needed to visit the glass museum in Weißwasser.

  3. I think stories of it’s strength are overblown. I recently bought 4 and am down to 3 within a few months.

One broke after a glass salt shaker fell maybe 1.5′ onto the rim breaking off a large piece and then it fell to the floor and shattered. The glass salt shaker had the same experience and was still intact. The superfest glass basically exploded when it broke.

  4. My family had some when I was a kid, but we found them awkhard to use. Their shape is designed to be stackable, but as a result of that, the bottom is very narrow, so they fall over easily. This led to more tear and wear, and in the end, most of them broke after all.
