Fucking shambles. And I can say that as I work on the railway and have had a few situations similar to this.
Firstly, the no announcements thing. Uh, could the guard/on board staff not go coach by coach and update people?
Secondly, their control. Wtf. Okay, train lost power. Overheads down. Train ain’t moving for a long time. You’ve got the Chunnel terminal/platforms close by. Could have quite easily organised a train evacuation to safety instead of letting passengers sit in shit conditions for 7 hours.
A few years back one of ours hit someone and it caused the unit to lose power. Staff onboard went through and kept people updated. They broke out the emergency kits and gave out foil blankets. Train I was on was brought alongside to assist with a train evacuation. Network Rail put a block on all traffic and we broke the ladders out, took a couple of hours but we got people off.
Hell just the other day we collided with what was probably a deer and our train was stuck. Even though we had power and the guard made announcements they still went through coach by coach and kept people updated.
I just cannot fathom why they let people wait that long. Get a block on traffic, get the appropriate people to the train (again, close to the Chunnel platforms) and get people safely off the train.
Inexcusable.
Somehow this feels brexitty.
Not saying this doesn’t happen to the Eurostar on the EU side, just that I’ve never heard of it
