  7. Israel didn’t believe Hamas had the capability to pull off such an elaborate plan of attack. The plans they intercepted outlined how Hamas would breach the border wall with Israel in 60 different places and surveillance cameras would be destroyed simultaneously. Hamas terrorists had been trained in secret in Iran for a year beforehand though.

  8. What could the Israeli government have done.

    They could have denied approval for a civilian event close to Gaza, given the likelihood of an attack. They could have shifted forces from the west bank to Gaza and fighting Hamas in the open and not in Gaza where they are able to blend in with the civilian population.

    The Israeli government were either ignorant and dismissive or were happy to use the attacks as a casus belli to enter Gaza.

  9. Yes, the Israeli government had intel suggesting plans for the attack. But suggesting a grand conspiracy is absurd. We’ve seen similar conspiracy theories with 9/11, where there was *knowledge* (shown in the 9/11 Commission report) but there was not *intent* to allow it.

    Intelligence is always a gamble; mistakes happen. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. This report (and others) suggests Israel got caught off guard, lulled into a false sense of security.

    They dismissed real threats due to assumptions built over decades of conflict. It was a case of stupidity, not conspiracy. The lesson here is that vigilance is key, and complacency can be costly- not ‘the Israeli government wanted the attack to succeed.’

  10. A major intelligence failure, but at the same time, when you are facing countless threats from all directions and are constantly on high alert for 75+ years, it is understandable that they missed/seriously underestimated the threat.

  11. Hamas is always “preparing for an attack” is this really the gotcha people think it is? They’ve been launching rockets into Israel on a regular basis for the past 20 years..

    Hamas “preparing for an attack” is just another day at the office for the IDF.

    However it’s kind of like trying to short the market. Most people get burned because markets act irrationally just like a terrorist organization works and thinks.

    No one can predict exactly when a great recession black monday will happen, but you can be prepared and take precautions. However it doesn’t seem like they did enough. but to act like it was 100% preventable is completely wrong

  23. The watchers* knew. They have been warning for years apparently but were ignored because sexism.

    * watchers is a women based unit in the IDF, and they are responsible for keeping a 24/7 watch of certain areas. It is one of the hardest roles mentally, as they have to watch a screen with immense focus for 9 hours a day

  25. After the war the Israeli people will demand a Special Inquiry Committee to investigate this disastrous failure. Israel always does that. These committees are always independent and reach damming conclusions about the people in charge. But unlike in the past, where recommendations weren’t taken with sufficient seriousness,I think this future committee’s indictments should be taken more serious than ever before.

    It’s unacceptable that Israelis in 2023, after 75 years of State, should be massively massacred.

  27. I think the Netanyahu administration deliberately ignored the warnings in the hope of galvanizing public support when the attack would actually happen.
    Hamas and Netanyahu keep each other in business.
