I’m renting a flat in Dublin which in the past had a storage heater in the sitting room. This was recently replaced by an electric radiator. My problem is that the switch for the rad is only powered at night suggesting it is on a timer, as it would have been storing heat before. (11pm to 8am). I’ve had a look at the fusebox and found the switch and an isolator maybe which both turn off the power to the rad if tripped down. Pictures below

Any one have any ideas how I can get power to this during the day, or where the timer might be located?

Cheers

  1. It would be very weird for such double pole isolator to be on a timer. Are you sure it is not a timer built into the new radiator? Maybe it only turns on at night when it gets colder due to thermostat? Is there a thermostat anywhere in the house, that would be wired up with this switch.

On another note, there is no way having a gap between two MCB is legal or safe. There should be a blanking plate in-between.

  2. There’s a timer in the the meter which sends power to storage heaters at night time. It’s certainly possible to change it, but would need an electrician to swap it in the fuseboard.

  3. The time switch for the night storage heating is in your meter box and you have to contact the esb to get it removed

  4. Simplest solution is to get an electrician to alter the wiring in the fuse board so that the circuit is always powered, and not on the timer.
