    At the beginning of the debate, Hannity looks straight at the camera, strokes his own ego to talk about how great he is, and then says he would stay out of it and just ask the questions

    Then he tees everything up to benefit DeSantis and the both of them still can’t hold a candle to Newsom.

    Letting DeSantis interrupt Newsom and speak over Newsom every time Newsom was making good points, but pushing back on Newsom when he tried to do the same.

  13. Newsom is one of my last choices in a hypothetical open Democratic primary. Just among governors he wouldn’t be higher than 5th. Guy is a weasel and policy wise a lot closer to the big businesses than he is to working class people.

    But you can’t deny the man is a fucking machine when it comes to public speaking. He is like an oratical terminator. I haven’t seen him speak off the cuff, but when he is going into a prepared debate he just takes people apart.

    I don’t necessarily want him in charge of anything, but damn glad he is out there doing this work.

  17. The biggest problem with all these debates is, nobody fucking highlights how big California is and how puny other states are!. LA County itself is bigger than 45 states or something in terms of population. CA economy is 8th biggest economy in the world and bigger than even Russian’s GDP. We should tell the conservatives idiots that they run a puny state (round off error in GDP) and they shouldn’t talk about it.

  18. Desantis whole strategy was constantly accusing Newsom of lying(accusing your opponent of what you’re doing) and getting help from Hannity; double teaming on Newsom. Both with cherry picked stats/infographics and at some points Hannity literally debating Newsom directly, saving little bro DeSantis.

    Newsom has a bright future for 2028.

    Also, wtf is wrong with DeSantis face and body? He’s constantly trying to hold a smile that you can 100% tell is fake. You can tell he’s uncomfortable in his own skin fidgeting instead of just moving fluidly. Those high heels must be really uncomfortable.

  19. DeSantis is failing and Newsome had an easy target. But this was far more entertaining that a Trump/Biden2 match up. Too bad the Democrats won’t let anyone else run. They have better candidates out there.

  20. Newsom is Biden’s protege for 2028. Biden is a tough old fox and knows a lot – Newsom has made a good move.

    People don’t like Biden because he’s old and doesn’t ring their subcortical bells but he stood there in the front row and took notes during Obama’s eight years and knows more about being a president than just about anyone.

    Newsom has noticed this and he’s going to leverage his connection to Biden as much as he can. Biden will be like Carter – active throughout his eighties and into the early 90s.

  24. Anyone who thinks California is this bastion of crime and death has never been here. Our state is gorgeous. Our state is amazing. I never think, “What if I can’t find a job?” In California, you have EVERYTHING.

    The only reason CA sucks is that so many people live here that traffic is bad and rent / home ownership is expensive. Still, I’d rather live nowhere else in America.

    Speaking of the carefully selected stats, one showed how much gun control each state had (CA high, FL low) and then said showed how many mass shootings there were with 21 for CA and 9 for FL. What that doesn’t show is CA has 18 MILLION more people so yeah, probably going to be higher. And if you drill down more, the same study also said you are 25% less likely to be killed in a mass shooting in CA than anywhere else in the country.

  32. DeSantis fucked up big time, and so did his handlers. He was so desperate to remain relevant that he agreed to debate a guy with nothing to lose. Newsom could only have benefited from the debate; he’s not running for president, and he doesn’t give a single shit about what the average Fox viewer thinks because they aren’t voting for him.

    DeSantis, on the other hand, *is* running for president (if you can call his pathetic shitshow a “campaign”) and had everything to lose, so sharing a stage with a man who isn’t running is essentially lowering his own stature while elevating Newsom’s, and that’s if the strategy goes *well* for DeSantis, which it did not.

    Desperation doesn’t win elections. DeSantis thought beating up California and San Francisco on TV would earn him a few points with the Republican base (but even if he gets a bump in the polls, it won’t last), and he had hoped Hannity would help him, but Newsom is smarter than the two of them, and he basically spent the debate mocking DeSantis and making him look small. Meanwhile, Donald Trump is DeSantis’ real political target, but DeSantis too much of a coward to take the fight to him and his cult followers. He doesn’t like hard work.

    DeSantis isn’t fit for any office. He’s a chickenshit who wouldn’t know a winning strategy if it bit him on the ass. How is a man like that supposed to deal with the various domestic and foreign relations issues our country faces? He just doesn’t have the right skillset.

    He’s also an asshole, but that’s beside the point. Asshole or not, he’s a shitty campaigner and a weak, cowardly man.

  34. I’m pretty liberal and I’m going to be honest I don’t know how anyone can say Newsom “destroyed” DeSantis here. In the first 12 minutes I was already a bit dismayed at how he was handling himself.

    I feel like people are letting their bias come through a bit too much. Just because you like what someone has to say doesn’t mean they say it well every time. He definitely danced around a lot of hard hitting questions. The debate did feel like it targeted California more than anything but it’s on Fox so I didn’t expect much there. But Newsom was giving off a bad vibe, I thought DeSantis did a lot better here than he’s done in Republican debates in the past.

  35. DeSantis is never going to be President. He might work fine in Florida or be able to appeal to voters there, but we’re seeing repeatedly he sucks on the national level and specifically the national debate stage.

    Totally underwhelming and I don’t think his issues can be fixed. Put aside even his stupid beliefs and meandering answers, as well as his total inability to just switch the topic as most even mediocre politicians can, his body language is terrible even as a layperson viewer.

    He grimaces, he nods at odd times, his smile is weirdly fake, we all now believe he’s wearing lifts. It’s just over. Even if he and his beliefs did not suck, it’s American politics and he looks horrible on stage. Give it up.

  36. I did not watch this debate. But I have seen it reliably told that Newsom kicked DeSantis’s ass on Slate, HuffPost, Washington Post, and other left outlets. Meanwhile, Fox News, RCP, and every bro sports outlet assures me that DeSantis dragged the floor with Newsom’s skull.

    Sigh.
