I know, this sounds quite boring but maybe you’ll have some fun this weekend by counting birds for one hour. If you haven’t heard of it: NABU (Naturschutzbund Deutschland ~ nature conservation association Germany) is asking to report sightings of birds this weekend for their project “Stunde der Wintervögel”.

here’s the form: [https://www.nabu.de/tiere-und-pflanzen/aktionen-und-projekte/stunde-der-wintervoegel/mitmachen/13147.html](https://www.nabu.de/tiere-und-pflanzen/aktionen-und-projekte/stunde-der-wintervoegel/mitmachen/13147.html)

Unfortunately the project seems to be only in German, but through their App “NABU Vogelwelt” you can learn the German bird names. They even have a hotline this weekend (10-6 pm, 0800-1157115), maybe they can also help you out in English.

I’ve just finished counting birds at my balcony. Now I feel old, but happy and slightly more educated on birds 🙂

UPDATE: Wow, thank you all for the support!

Here you can find the results: [https://www.nabu.de/tiere-und-pflanzen/aktionen-und-projekte/stunde-der-wintervoegel/ergebnisse/21784.html](https://www.nabu.de/tiere-und-pflanzen/aktionen-und-projekte/stunde-der-wintervoegel/ergebnisse/21784.html)

  1. Some of the common winter garden birds with their English translations. Note: many North American species have the names of European species, but are not the same (e.g. see the “Spoonful of Sugar” scene in *Mary Poppins* which incorrectly places an American robin in London).

    * Amsel = blackbird
    * Blaumeise = blue tit
    * Buchfink = chaffinch
    * Buntspecht = greater spotted woodpecker
    * Eichelhäher = jay
    * Elster = magpie
    * Feldsperling / Feldspatz = tree sparrow
    * Grünfink = greenfinch
    * Grünspecht = green woodpecker
    * Haussperling / Hausspatz = house sparrow
    * Kleiber = nuthatch
    * Kohlmeise = great tit
    * Krähe = crow
    * Rotkehlchen = robin
    * Stieglitz / Distelfink = goldfinch
    * Zaunkönig = wren

    EDIT: Typo

  2. Not too many birds here, but thanks for the heads up on the app! I often wonder what I am looking at when out hiking.

  3. Oh, yeah that is a cool project! Already submitted, Thanks to home office with garden view and a quiet day at work 🙂

    I would have never thought to raise awareness in here, good one, OP!
