Is Italy refusing to return it to Munich or are they refusing an offer from the Munich museum to return it to Italy? It’s not clear and article behind paywall.
*meanwhile…the British museum*
Who has the statue here?
As i understand hitler bought the statue it somehow made its way to italy and the munich museum wants it back?
“It’s ours because Hitler bought it” does not sound good.
Possession is nine tenths of the law. They’re Germoney’s now.
Well….there must be copies of this copy in every country in Europe, and frequently in *many institutions in each country*! Surely this statue ought to be in Italy.
A timely report what with all the Napoleon enthusiasm around right now. Same thing happened after his final defeat. He had looted great historical art treasures from Italy for the glory of France, and their proper restitution wasn’t entirely without wranglings in high places.
The fucking nerve I swear…
“It belongs to us because Hitlers bought it” doesn’t sound great.
I would keep schtum Munich.
>The Discobolus Palombara is a 2nd Century Roman copy of a long-lost Greek bronze original. Hitler had bought the Roman copy from its private Italian owner in 1938 under pressure from Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and against the wishes of the education minister and cultural officials. The statue, unearthed at a Roman villa in 1781, was returned to Italy in 1948 as part of works illegally obtained by the Nazis.
Sorry, if it’s just a copy of a Greek bronze, can’t just Germany ask Italy to made a copy of the copy and send it to Munich? What’s the issues here, it’s gonna stay in a museum, a lot of what is exposed in museums are a copy. If money it’s the issue the 1938 money transfer could be revalued and rearranged in exchange of a copy of the Roman statue…
P.S. My apologies, my English is terrible.
The Germans would better give to Italy also the many other artifacts stolen by the Nazis rather than asking for something that they think they “bought”.
I mean what is baffling to me is that Germans always complain about Italy betraying them in the war, but they don’t realize that German troops more than once treated badly locals, even stealing stuff. Most Italians under Mussolini hated him and the Nazis, but weren’t brave enough to revolt until the Allies showed up.
Partisans weren’t really fond of Germans
Wtf did I just read..?
Wtf München still does not understand that everything loser Hitler did is worthless.
I wish Germany and England return our stolen artifacts specifically Nefertiti bust and Rosetta stone
