Interesting considering their strong support on this sub appears to be all for it
There’ll be mad conspiracies about it all now
I wonder if there will be an increase in libelous articles towards Sinn Féin now considering some think that it might hurt their support?
There’s no hard evidence that it has hurt their support, and they also win the vast majority of cases that they take, but it’s a viable tactic I can see being taken by their political opponents.
>Mr Lappin claimed the article and accompanying photograph meant, in their ordinary meaning and innuendo, that he “is a member of a criminal and terrorist organisation operating under the name and style of the IRA”. He also alleged the publication meant, in its ordinary meaning and through innuendo, that he is a criminal murderer and a member of a criminal group that engages in murder, said the judge.
That is arguing that comparing a Sinn Féin member to the IRA, associating them with the IRA, etc, could be defamatory. That would, in theory, scare journalists off from a very sore point in Sinn Féin’s history.
A shame they didn’t ask the same question of journalists.
