NB this was my mate, not me doing this.

  1. Works very well at Tebay services. Plus sausage and chips isn’t even on the adult menu.

  2. Those are all child portions?? Someone is planning to eat all of this and call it one main??

  3. Honestly didn’t know this hack, duly noted! My way at getting back for signing up to a loyalty card which gives you absolutely nothing.

  4. Most menus I see have a age stipulation on the child’s menu.

I would order them myself as prefer a small portion but most of the time I am refused. Pizza Hut used to let you have the teenagers menu but would charge an extra £2 when serving to an adult. I thought that was reasonable but last time I went they had stopped doing it 🙁

I don’t think they make any money on child’s portions (as you point out they are better value for money) hence why most places don’t serve them to adults.

  5. On a similar kids meal tip, my kids are mostly beyond kids meals but I can’t afford to get them adult meals. So we tend to buy 4-5 kids meals for the 3 of them, gets them plenty of food but much cheaper.

  6. IKEA 12 meatballs, mash (or chips) and peas: £5

IKEA kids portion, 4 meatballs, mash (or chips) and peas: £2.20

I reckon your mate should put the fork down and pick up a calculator.

Also, if a full plate of food in a restaurant/café/bistro/whatever is £5 and you’re employing inconvenient workarounds to make it even cheaper (or trying to, anyway), I reckon you might want to reassess whether going out to eat is a good idea in the first place. I’m all for saving a bit of money, but bloody hell.

  7. Wagamama Kids meals are like half portions, I wouldn’t do it in person but on delivery it’s pretty handy

  8. My mate thought she was being clever ordering a kids Christmas meal in wetherspoons, it came with roasted Mediterranean vegetables not roast dinner veg and no gravy. that was a fail.

  9. Food stands at events… We all know them… £13 for a burger and a handful of chips….

You see all the prices, but you don’t even consider the chips sat there at £4.50, because it’s so cheap, you’ll probably get about 3 chips… Right?… It’ll be a kid’s portion…

Well… Surprisingly no… I’ve actually been genuinely surprised by the portions of chips I’ve been given at events. Like… I’d have been happy to pay for that outside of an event kinds of portions…

My theory is that they know most people are just going to get a proper meal so that’s where they put a bulk of the markup. But they also know people might want an extra side of chips to top off their own meal, or to share out for everyone to top off. So they keep the markup low on the chips as to not disuade people from doing it.

End result is that you could just fill up on chips at a fraction of the cost. Or even absolutely stuff yourself and have a few quid to spare…

The best stalls seem to be those that always throw in a handful of chips with meals. They always seem to have the best portions for the price as opposed to those where you have to buy chips as part of the order. I.E You order a burger and it comes with chips vs you order a burger and a portion of chips

It’s bland… But shit… I’ll take bland if it comes at that kind of saving… If I’m paying for a meal that isn’t going to fill me, I’d much rather it be £4 or so than near £15. Just fuck off to McD’s or something later on, same price as a whole and you’ve got two meals out of it vs the people throwing £15 on a burger who’re only going to be in the same boat as you anyway…

  10. The real life hack is to never set foot inside that dystopian hellscape.

Edit: since when did CasualUK lose its sense of humour?!

  11. Your mate has my attention. You can tell him im a four person sharer nacho plate kinda gal.

  12. I mean, at the point you are ordering kids’ meals at Ikea to save 50p, it might be time to consider a food bank? Cooking at home? Maybe some financial planning? There’s three life hacks for you

  13. Went to IKEA the other day, and I swear the meatballs are smaller, taste worse, and the gravy is like water now.

  14. This was a great hack when I went to Disney World. Some of the counter service restaurants would have the exact same thing but for $5 less than the adult version. You also get 2 sides, you can get 2 fries so you get more fries than the adult version. The only downside was a smaller drink.

  15. The best hack is ordering a kids nando meal to go. I just prefer the portion size. Small chicken burger, small fries and corn and a drink for about a fiver. Can’t be beat.

  16. I don’t want that much chips and mash. I want the old school 20 meatball portion you could get in the past. Not 15, not 12. 20.
