“There are 10 main characters in this film, and nine of them are detestable.” Hate-watching the “Family Stone” Christmas movie has become a tradition for some.

  1. without reading the article I assume the dead character was the non detestable one?! I’m not even saying that with any disrespect I haven’t seen the movie in 18 years but I don’t think they can write a dead character as hate-able for a holiday movie

  2. Oh my God I saw this movie on DVD when it came out and never had opportunity to discuss it with anyone. It’s one of those movies with a trailer that makes it seem happy, but it’s sad.

I will say that for some reason , the line “that’s me and you, kat. Me and you” by diane Keaton is burned in my brain

  3. I tried to watch this movie for the first time this year. I couldn’t get to the end. Yes, I thought the plot was horrible and the characters entirely unrelatable. But my time’s up moment was when they depicted a female driver’s inability to drive forward without hitting something, who then tries to reverse the car and then hits something else. How cliche and boring when a woman can’t do shit for herself. But that’s my pet peeve.

  4. I like it. It stars out with everyone being awful but I think there is a ton to like by the end. You have to grade it on a holiday movie curve. Is this kind of hate deserved? Yeah. But I am still on board.

  5. Um, this movie is good.

It sure as shit better than Four Christmases, which is one of the worst movies ever made.

  6. So… Kinda like every family to have ever existed on this earth?

  7. As someone who buried his mom from breast cancer right after Christmas, this movie hits. But also most of the characters are fucking awful.

  8. I remember watching this movie and I absolutely hate it. That family is horrible, if my family act like that to someone I like, we would have a big problem. The fact that SJP’s character wasn’t even bad and they made her so anxious she made even more mistakes in their in their eyes but her sister was someone they loved instantly. They know they not getting rid of her if her little sister marries into family? How the f* fiance change bride right there on the spot to start date brides sister? Wtf was that plot?

Family can be difficult but if they are that horrible and gang around hating someone who did nothing wrong that much, idk, it’s time to separate from family unless they at least act tolerable.

    Sorry for rant.

  9. Oh no not a movie depicting horrible people and whacked out family dynamics around the holidays

  10. This movie is an example of the manic pixie dream family.

  11. this movie inspired me to have a bunch of kids so they could grow up into adults and come home for the holidays and cause DRAMAAAA. (oldest one goes to college next year, I’m getting closer to the jackpot)

  12. Legit in my all time top 3.

Love this movie. Problematic characters and all.

It’s a neoliberal fantasy but so what? It’s entertaining.

  13. Years ago, my best friend’s mother passed away after a long suffering battle with Huntington’s Disease. She and her sisters spent days cleaning up, going through their mother’s things, sorting it all out, as you do when a loved one dies. They decide to take a break and go see some dumb romantic comedy to feel a little less sad for a couple of hours. They went and saw this, which was advertised as a romantic comedy, and boy oh boy, that was a rough choice.

  14. I usually don’t care for Christmas movies, but this one blew me away. I absolutely love it!
