Literally all China had to do, was not be a douchebag to its neighbours in the South China Sea and it’s people in Hong Kong and the region would’ve been like “Hey, China’s not so bad after all what with belt and road and investments and everything.” Especially considering how just a few years ago, most of the region were teetering on that ‘We don’t really like the USA THAT much either.’
Instead, they went “Oooga booga, pooh pooh want all the honey. Wolf warriorrrr” And almost everyone in the region pivoted and went “Hey so America, friends again? Maybe a military base in our county? A carrier battlegroup maybe?” It’s just mind-boggling how quickly China managed to squander a decade of increasing good will within a few years just because winne pooh could not just chill a little. Tsai Ing Wen got swept back into office earlier despite slumping popularity, simply because China was so belligerent everyone in Taiwan went “How bout no?” Now of course, the Taiwanese elections are far tighter, but still.
As someone who used to live in Hong Kong, I’ll never forget how the CCP turned our city into a dystopian shit hole after the 2018 protest.
They straight up throw the “Sino-British Joint Declaration” and “one country two system” out the door. Arrested everyone who opposed and criticized the CCP and then broadcast propaganda on all TV channels nonstop.
In the following year, tons of HK citizens just packed their shit up and moved. Most people with British BNO passports applied for citizenship in the UK. Most of my friends left for Taiwan and the US. The city was never the same again.
Is there any party in Taiwan that supports reunification with China?
All they had to do was treat Hong Kong with kindness and it would have become powerful propaganda for how retuning to China is a good thing. Absolute smooth brained dictatorship decided to do the absolute opposite. Then again China has a history of their leadership making incredibly stupid decisions.
it’s not that they can’t be trusted to keep promises, though they can’t. it’s that they view taiwan’s independence as illegitimate as hong kong’s entirely never-existent independence. china was right about not being obligated to honor promises to hong kong because they simply owned hong kong the whole time. britain was only a renter and their lease was up.

Think of Ukraine when you vote also.
