“Max & Moritz” is the beloved, oft reprinted, widely translated classic German 1865 book for children, about the innocent adventures of two lovable titular little boys, who try to murder a neighbor in their village, rob another neighbor, burn another neighbor’s face, and end up murdered and eaten.

  1. Ooh is there some editions in English? I would love to give this as a Christmas present to my nephews just to see the look on my sisters face!

  2. We had this in Hebrew when I was a kid.

The ending was censored, apparently. As I recall, it ended with them being taken to the mill, nothing particularly graphic was shown.

  3. Well it is much less disturbing than Struwwelpeter when on each page a child dies a horrifying death.

  4. Oh shit I never thought about it. Those are the historic base for the rollercoaster in the Efteling, Netherlands. The pictures of those two in the coaster are the same as in the showed pictures

  5. My grandparents had this book in Lithuanian, in black and white. I thought it was really weird and didn’t like it much 😄

  6. Oh man, Vietnam flashbacks. My dad had this collection in his library and read it to me and my siblings / I later read it myself. I remember this book gave me a strange mixture of revolt and fascination (also a dislike for these boys, whatan awful pair of brats).

On the plus side: this book proves that there have always been irresponsible and evil „pranks“ even before the advent of Tiktok.
