The weather is fine and people oddly lie about it often.
This is how I felt being pro-Independence and discussing the referendum with my family.
Robbie Burns’ poetry isn’t that good.
Outside of the central belt people are rather conservative (small c)
Historically, we were rarely very noble.
Links are better than Lorne sausage. Lorne sausage is always too dry.
Still Game is mid.
Haggis is awful
It’s a country still dominated by the politics of the Troubles
Most Proclaimers songs are pretty poor
That its an incredibly closed-minded, insular place.
This country (particularly the West of Scotland) has a huge problem with cutting down the tall poppy. A lot of people are discouraged from being their own individual and you really don’t start questioning it until you’re exposed to people from different countries and different backgrounds. A lot of Scottish people are not very open-minded when it comes to difference and it shows. Even something as mundane as reading a book on a park bench can lead to people making snarky comments. Huge amounts of ‘riddy culture’ that encourages conformity and labels any hobby/interest (or even item of clothing) that is niche as something to be ashamed of or embarrassed by. The result being that it suppresses any sort of creativity people may possess. It’s really not a good place for individual self-expression.
That’s not even getting into the all too prevalent attitude of ‘not getting ideas above your station’. Wanting to do well for yourself beyond the post-industrial town that you grew up in is treated with suspicion amongst some quarters, leading to the cutting down of the tall poppy that I mentioned before. We’ll doubt people if they express any sort of dreams or ambitions, and then if they do end up doing well, act like we backed them from the very start.
As to what causes it, I’m not entirely sure of that myself. Could be the influences of cultural Presbyterianism on the Scottish psyche… could also be a sense of helplessness amongst segments of the population, particularly those who grew up in poverty and feel trapped as a result. Could be the rampant “everything is fucking shite” kind of nihilism that’s prevalent here.
Braveheart is a shit film. On top of that, it was Mel Gibson dipping his toe into his “passion” by making Wallace a Jesus figure and throwing historical facts out the window.
people aren’t that nice
Your parliament building looks like shit
Cordial is fine. Squash is fine. Fruit juice is fine.
Diluting juice? Not real. Literally might as well be a new cleaning product.
Glasgow is pretty shite. Especially in comparison to Edinburgh.
I’ll preface this by saying that I’m foreign and I love it here, but it’s not as progressive and/or welcoming as a lot of people online make it out to be. There are still some very serious problems with racism and discrimination that need to be addressed.
Also Fife as a whole isn’t bad. There are some seriously deprived areas but some lovely parts as well, so it’s not really different from the rest of Scotland in that regard. I actually really like Fife and Fifers, and would only move elsewhere if circumstances forced me to.
And perhaps my most controversial one: making fun of Americans for being enthusiastic about their Scottish ancestry is tired and boring, and it seems like just an easy way to farm karma on this sub.
Being Scottish is pretty great, as opposed to some widespread nihilistic views. It’s not perfect, of course, but it’s far from a disaster.
Also, Scottish tablet is the superior dessert.
Sugar Free Irn Bru is nicer than “proper” Irn Bru because “proper” Irn Bru is far too sweet and tastes like shit to anyone with an adult’s palate.
Also, shortbread is shit and a Tunnock’s teacake is nothing more than a marshmallow on top of a digestive and covered in shit chocolate. And marshmallows are horrible and anyone over the age of 10 who likes them is a dick.
That the contrariness of our culture is to our benefit.
That we don’t all sing from the same hymn sheet, that pushes us to push across our point and while there’s a lot of shite that gets said, it’s a form of evolution and what manages to survive tends to be common sense.
And that process gives us a healthy skepticism to examine ideas with.
That the heart of most argument is people caring.
Irn Bru is awful.
An independent Scotland would be much better outside of the EU.
Scotland couldn’t survive financially without Britain.
As a card carrying SNP member, and yes voter. I’m really fucking glad we lost.
If we won in 2014, we’d have been ran by Alex Salmond, a complete and utter pest.
If the SNP somehow convinced somebody to give them the vote back in 2019-2020-2021-2022, we’d have Nicola the campervan princess leading the charge right now.
I think, what I’m trying to say, is nearly all our politicians, are absolutely dodgy, shit bastards that continuously let us down.
From legit, all parties.
Scotland has been used by various sides of the elite for hundreds of years now, putting the working class against each other in a fight for power. The only difference is the ballot box today, if it was 300-400 years ago the SNP woulda been sending us all in to die in a rebellion and they’d have fled to France no giving a fuck what carnage they just caused.
