The major issue with this is that it very much represents a “thin end of the wedge,” scenario. Once this legislation is established it would be very easy to extend its range to include other aspects of your financial affairs. For example, your account shows a cash withdrawal of £200, what did you spend that on? Do you have receipts? This level of scrutiny is unwarranted, regardless of the source of your finances but with this legislation, this level of scrutiny is possible in the future. You have committed no crime yet you are treated as if you have merely by claiming benefits. Incidentally, this will apply to ALL benefits, including pensions.
I think most would agree that if you are legitimately suspected of criminal activity you should expect the full scrutiny of the law but the mere act of claiming benefits is most assuredly NOT reasonable grounds for suspicion nor should it be treated as such.
They can snoop the Poor but massive Companies can get away with all sorts…
How about snooping through the bank accounts of Tory donors?
Invasion of privacy and they should have a process where there is set of facts giving rise to possible fraud.
Don’t forget that a human being will be doing this.
They will enable this, knowing how harmful this is, just to maintain their job.
They want to see how anyone can survive on £70 a week

Takes me back to the lady whose account was flagged up after using a McColls shop because the system thought she was in a relationship with an actual person of that name without disclosing to DWP
And this was years ago.. pretty sure the article is floating about
Its just another red herring.. everytime government is in deep shit go after those least well off and/or vulnerable to keep their base happy “something is being done” when actually, the powers were always there, they just can’t be seen to do nothing
I’ve gone without to accumulate for my children. So that they wouldn’t have to. I’ve been watched and assessed throughout and now my hard work is about be harvested. I’d rather set fire to the lot of it.
