Apologies if this is inappropriate for the subreddit, but I can’t seem to be able to translate this cup. The best I can tell is that it’s saying “from the town of” but can’t seem to figure out where or what Sall is.

Need help figuring out what is written on my late grandmother’s cup

  1. Technically it says “from the town of the foreigner”, but as other commenters have said, Baile na ngall is in Kerry.

  2. I’ve the same jug but with Killarney written on it. There’s a matching bowl so it might be worth looking out for.

  3. I live in Baile na nGall in Waterford… it translates as ‘Home of the Stranger/Foreigner’

  4. The Ó at the beginning means “from”. It’s a typical example of spuvenir cou try style pottery that was produced all over Ireland in the 1940s and 1950s. The style is the same. Jugs and cups were common.

  5. From the Town of the Foreigner! “The town of the foreigner” I would assume is actually a place name, probably translated to Ballygall in English, maybe ballygally

  6. Ballydavid west of Dingle in, there’s a beautiful pub called TPs right on the beach. I would advise you go there 😊

  7. Both Baile na nGall’s are gaeltachts too I believe. So the mug is either from Kerry or Waterford . . . or China.

  8. Wow! I have a little set from my grandmother too, though my set is in English, but it’s marked “Carrig Ware” so seems to be from the same factory.

  9. Hey, I just want to say I appreciate all y’all (thought I’d play up the Yank persona, lol). My dad moved abroad too young to know anything, and I never got to meet either of my grandparents, so I really appreciate everyone here for the info that lets me connect with them, even if just a little!

  10. It means ‘look, some stupid Americans, let’s sell them some shite and tell then its lucky or something “
