Carbon Brief has done an excellent summary on how big COP28 really is this year.
It is even bigger than expected. Over the last year, the UAE and Dubai and the COP28 organizing committee have been talking about 70,000 people attending.
At the beginning of COP, I was hearing numbers like 82,000 and 84,000.
It turns out, when you include support staff we end up with over 97,000 people with badges to attend, and over 3,000 people with virtual badges for a grand total of over 100,000 people.
A veritable city of people.
Crazy.
A zoo, or gong show, or really, rather than a climate conference a Burning Man festival in the desert.
Like our global population, and the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere, and our consumption, the number of people at COPs has been increasing exponentially.
Crazy.
My vote is that all future COPs, if any, be restricted in size to 5,000 and be held each year in Bonn, Germany at the UN venue, which is large enough to hold the conference.
Please donate at http://PaulBeckwith.net to support my decision not to go to COP28 this year. Also, to allow me to load up on Newton dog treats and Shackleton cat treats.
