This is basically a stunt bill. It wouldn’t apply to Santos and the last two members expelled decades ago weren’t even on the modern retirement plan. In short – it’s a law that would affect zero people. While legislators love to throw around the “I’m saving taxpayer dollars!” line the fact is that if this bill even goes up for debate it will have cost the taxpayers much more than it has saved them just in the cost of congress’ time.
Furthermore, as the article points out they can already lose their pensions if convicted of a crime. There is a high bar for expulsion but the bar should be even higher to kick someone out of a pension they’ve already purchased.
Are Republicans looking to punish Santos or creating a motive for themselves to expel democrats in the future?
How about some prison time.
Is the only penalty for being a traitor to your country and oath that you might not get to keep all the money? That must be why these crimes are all rage.
Sounds great but only 6 in US history would qualify.
This is a PR stunt. Santos is not eligible for pension.
TIL that expelled congressmen get pensions.
They should be working to strip Trump of his huge Secret Service detail.
How about this they are paid 174,000. Why does anyone who served 5 years or more deserve a pension at all let them fund their ow retirement if they want more than social security like the rest of us. Just get rid of it entirely.
The bill is only a theatrical nothingburger.
Endorse
Damn I’ve never heard of this guy and we have the same weird last name
Good.
How many reps does he expect to expel next congress? Because less than 10 have been expelled in the last 230+years.
The fact that this isn’t already a thing…..doesn’t surprise me anymore.
Pass it! OR WE BOOT!!
Won’t pass.
They should strip themselves and the senate if their healthcare and make them pay for insurance privately. Only thing that’s gonna change this BS healthcare system in the US
Always wonder why things like this are happening. It’s easy to sit here and say, Yeah that’s a good idea and those people who get expelled don’t deserve their pension and were expelled for a reason but what do republicans aim to gain with this bill?
I think it’s part of their plan to set up for future scenarios where they could punish people they don’t like and expel people who don’t really deserve it while also making sure they don’t get pensions.
