I moved into an apartment about 20 days ago. Only last night I notice that my fridge had its light on when I close it. Meaning it probably doesn’t close fully.

I called the companies responsible for elektro, heizung etc and they told me it’s not their job. The hausmeister I cannot reach.

So I was just wondering if it’s something I can ignore for the time being or will it add a shit tonne to my utility rent and i won’t even know because I have warm mieter so they’ll just slap me with the difference at the end of the year.

The food stays quite cold but I’m worried energy is being wasted preserving that temperature. I don’t feel much cold air when I put my finger next to the opening.

  1. Have you moved into a furnished appartment or is the kitchen part of the rented appartment?

Normally a fridge is your buisness only except for special cases where you rent the kitchen directly from the landlord, but those are rare and have a special clause in the contract regarding repairs

In regards to the fridge, I personally would replace a fridge that doesnt close all the way, because the energy consumption will be through the roof

  2. I cannot say for sure because I am not experienced in renting furnished but I believe it would be your landlords task to check for repairs.
That said, personally I would check the setting of the door hinges because from the photos it looks like the cupboard door is the issue, not the built in fridge door. That can be adjusted with a Philips head screwdriver typically.

Do not ignore it as it is wasting energy, you should notice the compressor of the fridge running.

  3. You should be worried about energy consumption, but also condensation of water, which might drip on the floor and do more damage.

But maybe, it’s easy to fix. The fridge might not be screwed down, and might have moved back a little. Pulling it forth might help. From the pictures, that’s hard to say.

  4. If the fridge door is screwed to the cupboard, you can do what I did and remove the attachment.

It could close properly after that.
