Americans are sleepwalking into a Trump dictatorship

  1. Is there any confusion left about how “ordinary Gemans” let Hitler rise to power in Germany?

  2. Excerpts:

Donald Trump’s devolution into an American dictator who believes that he is on a mission from God as some type of chosen one continues. This is mentally pathological behavior on a massive level. His Hitler-like behavior is only going to get worse as next year’s presidential election approaches and the pressure from his criminal and civil trials increases.

Trump is telling his followers what they want to desperately believe. Public opinion, focus groups, and other research repeatedly show that a significant percentage of White Christians see Trump as a prophetic figure who is a tool for their “God” to make America a White Christian nation.

The greatest threat Mr Trump poses is to his own country. Having won back power because of his election-denial in 2020, he would surely be affirmed in his gut feeling that only losers allow themselves to be bound by the norms, customs and self-sacrifice that make a nation. In pursuing his enemies, Mr Trump will wage war on any institution that stands in his way, including the courts and the Department of Justice.

…Trump would weaken the global order by withdrawing from NATO, ending support for Ukraine which would advance the cause of Putin and the global antidemocracy movement,…

Will those who balked at resisting Trump when the risk was merely political oblivion suddenly discover their courage when the cost might be the ruin of oneself and one’s family?

American fascism as a force and idea, and the fascists and authoritarians and others who are attracted to such politics and vision, are very real – and denying that fact will not save this country or its democracy and future. They know the evil that they do and are doing it with their eyes wide open.

  3. No, people that won’t vote for Biden (or whoever the dem nominee ends up being) are walking us into a Trump dictatorship.

  4. When Americans first voted Trump into power in 2016, I thought “Maybe it’s understandable. They don’t know him and just wanted a change.”

Now after knowing *exactly* how he is as President, they *still* want him in power… I don’t know what to say.

  5. Americans aren’t, Republicans are. This is not a “both sides” issue, this is a Republican issue because Republicans refuse to do the bare minimum to hold Trump accountable because doing so might upend an election. We need to place the blame at the feet of elected Republican officials, right wing media, and ordinary citizens who are Republican and would rather destroy our democratic system to get what they want than lose another election.

  6. No we aren’t. What am I supposed to do? I’ve not voted for him every chance I’ve had to.

  7. Are we though? Every day we have new headlines about Trump being the doom of America/mankind.

If this is “sleepwalking” on Trump then we’re comatose on climate.

  8. One half of America is sleepwalking into it. And the other half is enthusiastically goose-stepping into it.

  9. There are many Americans who do not do not understand the threat of an authoritarian leader. And there are so many Americans who fully understand, and actively want an authoritarian leader. Both contingents have to be addressed

  10. Republicans. Republicans are happily marching America into a dictatorship.

  11. I only have one big qualm with the article. Trump doesn’t believe he’s on a mission for God; idiot Evangelicals believe that. Trump will just say whatever he needs to say to gain an advantage. If it means utter blasphemy, so be it. Trump has no beliefs. He believes in aggrandizing Trump. Conservative America is dirt stupid.

  12. No half the population wants a dictatorship the rest of us are voting Dem

  13. Democrats are not sleepwalking into a Trump dictatorship. Republicans are pushing us into it, and the media is complicit in promoting Trump while bashing Biden at every turn and failing to report on his administration’s accomplishments. And our glacially slow justice system is bending over backwards to prove Trump is above the law.

  14. Acquaintances I know who voted for Trump almost always say “was your life better when Trump was President, yes or no?”

This seems to be stereotypical for the voting bloc. They oversimplify the effect a President brings to the country & how long it takes to affect us.

We are living through his terrible policies now.

  15. Americans aren’t.

30% of Americans are in a political cult, the media keeps portraying Trump as a legitimate character and not the author of a terrorist attack on the country who claims to be running for President. If the criminal justice system fails to prosecute then we’re a country of no laws that enabled a dictator wannabe to legitimately run for office.

  16. Can we stop with these fearmongering headlines? It’s not going to help things

  17. Yeah well this messaging is helping to energize MAGA more than it is to galvanize the rest of us. How can Trump be a bumbling idiot and the future führer in chief? I do believe he’s an existential threat to the world at large, but doubt he can turn the military into his private goon squad. And seeing this messaging over and over is Orwellian, some of us can think for ourselves.

  18. Yes and whether he is actually elected or not. The coup continues.

  19. He already tried that and failed but kudos for Liz to try and save the battered and diseased eternal soul of her party. Voters might not have figured out that legalized campaign finance bribery is the main reason their reps do the bad things they do, but they mostly figured out that Trump was incompetent and evil in 2020.

He should have been tossed on his butt out of the party and not be polling hardly at all, of course. But there are silver linings. American voters including his base erode at the sight of his business acumen proving totally illusory and him throwing away their money for lawyers only to then throw his case deliberately. All the dictator stuff will end up being less of a problem for him than being a phony at money management and brutally losing nearly every court battle. That is a sad and sick problem group of voters to keep polling for him but it is happily shrinking. You don’t see the Dems proudly and fanatically supporting Anthony Weiner, do ya?? And he is tame and competent by comparison.

  20. Trump has been a loosing message in every election after 2016. Even when the polls have said otherwise.

We should still be scared out of our minds.

  21. We’re not asleep and Trump isn’t going to win.

  22. Only the ones who did that last time and not even all of them. He’s a crooked crook and most, except those deepest in the “rabbit hole” know that.

  23. I think Americans are hoping justice will prevail and he will finally be charged with a crime which will keep him from running again.

  24. No one takes power without the approval of the super wealthy.

  25. The media ~~Americans~~ are sleepwalking into a trump dictatorship

    Fixed it.

  26. From what I’ve been seeing plenty of them aren’t sleep walking into it but actively cheering it on.

  27. If he wins it will be a disaster. He’s already shown he has no clue on how to “hire the best people.” He’ll appoint every dumb Trump loyalist he knows to positions of power they have no qualifications for and the government will implode.

  28. Some Americans. The Americans who always gravitate to the most shallow talking point when they decide (Joe is too old, but whatabout her emails), they are the sleepwalkers.

  29. This is complete hyperbole. There are too many people in positions of power that are not just going to let the country be destroyed.

  30. The Dems maybe, but most GOP know 100% what Trump is and they don’t care. As long as they get power.

  31. If this is a real threat, then put him in prison for the crimes he’s committed. We can’t do anything to get Republicans not to vote for him.

  32. Who is this actually targeting? Is this supposed to be persuasive journalism?

  33. ~~Americans are sleepwalking into a Trump dictatorship~~

Americans are doing everything they can to prevent a Trump dictatorship. I’m fucking sick of these loser gloom and doom headlines. The tone should shift to giving us credit for being as active as we have in nearly every election since 2016. People seem aware of their rights being at risk due to conservatism more than ever so let’s start acting like it.

  34. Without using the word “vote”, what is the best thing we can do to stop this? I vote every time I can. This is what voting and representative democracy is supposed to control, right?

I am tired of articles telling me this inevitable disaster is heading our way. I want to know how to stop it, if voting isn’t the answer.

  35. German voters in 1936(38’?): “Yes, vote him in. what’s the worst that can happen?”

    By 1945 they knew.

  36. And others are actively walking into a Trump Dictatorship. I recall warning more left wing people about Trump the first time. “Well Hilary isn’t any better, she’s this she’s that “ boom! Roe V Wade overturned. I’m seeing the same in certain groups on the left mad about Biden’s Middle East policy..saying they won’t vote for him. Forgetting Trump had a literal Muslim Ban. That he called… The Muslim Ban. Black left wing mad about a Biden’s policy. Yet Trump is aligned with literal White Supremacists, that want them not to exist. But gas prices are higher ? Cmon people. The guy should be absolutely a no on most peoples list and yet we’re more picky with Biden than the proven Racist, Rapist, Abortion law killing, Muslim banner, Mexican attacker, fake university, fake cancer charity guy. And we’re like .. but Biden’s policy doesn’t do enough for this .. yeah and Trumps is the complete opposite end of existence or admittance for some.
