It’s science-*fiction*, but no, aspects of a famous person in the real world cannot possibly be *fictional*! Who’s the British Prime Minister whenever they need him or her? Not the original, that’s for sure! The only people outraged at this are racists, simple and clear. Isaac Newton being depicted as Black or Brown doesn’t add or detract anything from the story, apart from him being a minor character only, it simply doesn’t matter. But for little PoC kids it’s nice to see themselves represented as a famous English scientist. This is a non-issue blown out of proportions for clicks.
The next iteration of the Doctor is going to be Ncuti Gatwa, a *black* and *queer* man! How dare they!? How dare anyone make any character, no matter how small, non-white? This is stupid and racist.
Edit: -29 net votes after only 18 minutes. r/Europe showing it’s true colours.
This is why black supremacists think Cleopatra was black.
I’m surprised people still watch that show.
I’m convinced they just do it deliberately for the free publicity.
Why?
This is a show where queen Victoria was shown to be a werewolf, and people are having an issue with this?
The UK’s media and politicians are really pushing “we have always been diverse™” as their new national myth.
Technically he was a person of colour since he studied light and demonstrated that white colour is a combination of seven other colours. 😉
If Isaac Newton was Nigerian they would never cast a white person as him because that would be considered rascist
Thankfully I can differentiate between television and reality.
Like whoever takes things like those seriously doesn’t know what “acting” is.
I’m still waiting for the mlk biopic played by russel crowe
The scene lasted like 2 minutes and had no bearing on the story. Just used for a joke. The actor has worked with the show runner on another of his shows so it’s clearly just a producer giving a cameo-style role to his friend.
tbh he looks like a white guy with a tan, people need to stop crying
I once played an elderly Chinese man in a school play, despite the fact that I was a white 10 year-old. It’s just acting. As I recall some kid had to play a cat (and he wasn’t actually a cat in real life).
Where it has more importance is when it comes to the suspension of disbelief, so a black Isaac Newton would be a distraction in, say, a historical film featuring him. In a TV series about a time-travelling alien whose enemies include beings who have difficulties climbing stairs (I remember an episode in the 1980s in which the good Doctor very cleverly evaded them by running up a staircase, which enabled him to take stock of his situation and calmly decide what to do next, while the Daleks seethed a few feet below), it matters a lot less.
I’m pretty sure they’ve been doing things like that on the show for years, and I don’t need it to be 100 percent realistic when it’s a time travel and aliens show. Look at how productions of Shakespeare’s plays have always played with race, gender, time period, setting. This isn’t uncommon. That said, they were heavy-handed with the diversity elements in the first episode of these specials, but only because I think they overdid it in terms of telling us their message, rather than letting it be revealed more through actions. Like the woman in the wheelchair showing us she could still fight by firing rockets at people. We only needed her to take the action for the audience to get the message, but she then also called it out. There were a lot of moments like that where I think it would have been more effective to let the actions send the message.
Skin colour is where some people just can’t suspend their disbelief when watching their flying police box time travelling wizard show.
I couldn’t care less, they could have cast Newton as a female midget in a wheelchair if it’s a clearly fictional piece of media regardless if it depicts historical individuals. If we’re talking about media that is explicitly meant to be educational in nature ^^^*ahem* ^^^Netflix, then that’s a different matter.
It’s just silly casting. Many of the same reasons it would be silly to cast a white actor as Usain Bolt exist for this casting of Isaac Newton. But I guess everyone in production gets to feel good about themselves for their “progressive” casting and anyone who has a problem with it is just a racist. lol.
What trolls
Oh look a story about a multigenerational time lord who travels the galaxy, and the racists are upset that a British actor plays a British historic figure because it’s unrealistic.
If it wasn’t so tragic it would be hilarious.
Those people really have all that free time to be offended by DOCTOR WHO 🫠
It’s not like Dr.Who has ever been historically accurate. Cybermen nor Daleks ever made a real life invasion in the 40’s.
WTFC?
It’s the BBC, it’s what they do. Never let the truth get in the way …
Im surprised they didn’t make him a goth, green haired transexual
Frankly, if they made that South Asian Newton timeline an uchronia or alternate timeline, it would be acceptable and even understandable. But if I understood this right, it was supposed to actual history, and a continuation of the “woke historical revisionism” trend that today plagues Anglophone media **(with some cases being more egregious than others, I’m talking about “Cleopatra”)**.
