  1. 1. Source?
    2. If that’s true, it’s finally happening

  2. If its reported then imagine how many more are unreported.

  3. They’re investigating them, which means they’re finally getting through their backlog.

  4. Like I mentioned in an older thread about similar statistics, even though the reality of domestic violence is depressing, this new statistic is a positive, not negative development.

Domestic violence in Cyprus (and most societies around the world) has always been suspected to be at alarming levels, but in more conservative/patriarchal societies they tend not to be reported. In Cyprus in particular, people in the past would be dissuaded from reporting to “keep it for themselves” and so their community wouldn’t find out and they become ρεζίλι.

The fact it is being reported now is definitely a step in the right direction.

  5. 499 of those cases are from policemen beating their wives

  6. Then boomers wonder why the world has gone downhill. They have created generations of abusive people.

  7. Unfortunately police in Cyprus seem to not take domestic abuse very seriously,I know because my mom was a victim of abuse from my father when I was younger and the police didn’t help.

  8. A few months ago, I heard my upstairs neighbors running around loudly at 4 am and then a woman screaming, then silence. I called the police and reported it, but they just said it’s too late an hour and they don’t want to disturb anyone. So…that tells you about the competency of the police and how seriously reports are taken here.
