  1. Someone pointed out to me that Ireland and Finland have many things in common:

    – Both located on the fringes of Europe

    – Both have a population of ~5 million with low density

    – Both bilingual, with one language only spoken by a minority on the west coast

    – Both annexed by an Eastern neighbour at the beginning of the 1800s

    – Both became independent in the wake of WW1

    – Both neutral (until Finland recently joined NATO)

    – Both EU members who use Euro

    – Both love beer and spirits, but can’t buy them in the morning or at night
