Or pandemics, or infrastructure projects… (etc, etc)
Uk government is not prepared….(insert just about any title here). An exception would be, The uk government is prepared to oversee the erosion of standards, the erosion of everyone’s living standards, or the uk government is prepared to see the improvement of the rich and powerful living standards at the expense of the majority of the uk people.
The climate will acknowledge the UK’s inherent superiority to other nations and leave it as it is, a green and pleasant land.
Seriously, climate *mitigation* is a topic that is barely mentioned at all. We can try and reduce emissions, or not, but things ARE going to get very bad, and reducing co2 is a very long term strategy that doesn’t affect the situation in the moment.
So the government needs to now be spending billions preparing for different situations. What happens if it doesn’t rain for 6 months? What happens if it only rains for 6 months and all crops are wiped out? Is there a plan for widespread forest fires? Flooding?
Reducing CO2 is like applying the brakes. Climate mitigation strategy is putting on a seat belt. The fact that the government refuses to do the latter says a lot about the suicidal nature of the people in power.
When was the last time the UK government was prepared for anything.
If we were invaded we’d have only enough ammo for a week. Thank God this government are prepared to Don armour and go out there in the first wave for us /s
> Storms, Floods, Heatwaves
The last time we ever had floods that were BAD was 2007. Only 13 people died and it caused £6.5 Billion in damages. Sort of a pain, but not crippling.
I would like to think the heatwaves are less of a disaster and more of a luxury in the summer.
A massive undiscussed issue is drainage. Our drainage is typically designed for 1 in 30 year storm events so there’s a 3% ish chance we get one a year. Most of the drainage in the country was installed before we started accounting for climate change, so the drainage isn’t ready for the shorter sharper rain events we have, so we’ll be seeing more and more flooding.
There are a few ways to make the drainage take more water at a time but typically if we’re looking to increase how much flow it can take above its design flow we’ll need to dig up massive sections of the drainage network, which will involve digging up massive sections of the road network.
Just to caveat new surface water drainage is typically done as a Sustainable Drainage System (SDS) so are not impacting the network, I’m more commenting on the historic networks like in London, Manchester etc. It’ll cost 10s of billions
Strong “It’s the next governments problem” vibes from the Tories, as always.
We are monumentally fucked and everyone is still plodding along arguining over what colour logo we like our political parties to have. Are they even discussing this shit in government or are we at the ‘just make yourself busy until it’s over’ stage? No way I’m gonna bring a kid into the shit show that’s going to happen in the next 40 years.
The only thing the UK is prepared for is moaning about the weather
Well the country decided to elect a party into government that doesn’t believe in the concept of governing. I can only assume the public was well informed about this and are actually quite keen to be annihilated.
UK politicians don’t prepare for *anything*, because then if something doesn’t happen they get raked over the coals for wasting money.
Look how they ignored [Exercise Cygnus](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exercise_Cygnus), just four years before the covid pandemic because they were too busy not getting ready for Brexit.
This government isn’t prepared for anything. Except maybe leadership contests?
Maybe the 750,000 immigrants we just got in can help.
