Good centrist piece , from a former Minster for justice .
>Politicians need to appreciate that they are losing touch with popular sentiment and losing control of an unsustainable pressure on our physical resources. A few months ago, the phrase “Ireland is full” was derided as crypto-fascist dog whistling. But now, we are struggling very unsuccessfully to cope with the realities of a collective failure at national and EU level to deal with economic migration issues.
A collection of platitudes disgused as an opinion piece. He rehashes the legal situation, then dances around the point of ‘migration posing as asylum-seeking’ a couple of times without forming an opinion on what to do with it.
He clearly wants to say that we should curb the amount of asylum seekers coming in, but is too much of a coward to say it.
Michael McDowell has one article that he writes every couple of weeks where the core idea is always him being passive aggressive about the fact that he hasn’t been a relevant voice in politics for decades.
Looking forward to seeing Una Mullallys response to this after her powerhouse performance on Inside Politics recently.
Thanks Michael for pointing out there’s a migration crisis and a housing crisis and then saying “something’s gotta give”. Very insightful, ye worthless shite.
Right wing dick head says right wing dick head stuff.
“The question that the EU now faces is whether existing practice in relation to asylum-seeking is still sustainable when the process is being used as a means of mass migration for largely economic reasons. The world has changed utterly since historical international conventions for asylum were first promulgated in the mid-20th century. Those conventions should be rethought.”
Rethought how? How do we reform the international protection application process while ensuring that the most vulnerable people are safe? I feel it’s common knowledge that the system is being abused by economic migrants without the skillset to migrate into Ireland via a legal route. I don’t need to read another article on this. I want to know what policies can be implemented to deter economic migrants without harming genuine applicants
We could do worse than having him back in government.
In McDowell’s next article he’ll state “In winter, it gets colder”. Very insightful and thorough thought process.
Coming from Michael McDowell who led that dog whistling referendum on citizenship? No thanks.
Gowanoutadah Michael! You’re still unsuitable for the presidency.
Always a nice pulse checker to see what that absolute cretin thinks and be reassured I’ve fuck all in common with him
McDowell for Vice President?
He must be wrong because the majority in this sub wants unlimited immigration.
They never asked.
We support helping vulnerable people.
We do not like being taken advantage of.
We simply want reform in particularly on appeals.
Appropriate deportation measures in place.
The left has gone insane with the issue of migration.
