My dad is from Eeklo and I was reading the English wikipedia page for it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eeklo
>At around that time the legend of “recooking” appeared, actually a rejuvenation recipe that involved drinking a youth elixir, cutting one’s head off and baking it again. While the head was in the oven, a green cabbage took its place on the body, symbol of the empty head.
From a quick scan of the Dutch version I saw nothing like it in there, and googling ‘recooking’ and things about cutting your head off and youth potions doesn’t lead me anywhere but back to wikipedia. I know the 16th century had plenty of silly beliefs but was someone just having some fun or was this actually a thing that people believed? Says it was added first in 2006.
