on the bright side, now we have no other option than to live forever
It was recently reported that the Respected Comrade of North Korea faces the same problem and begs his people to take action in the bedroom. Will the Dutch MP do the same?
Who would have thought that the Netherlands and North Korea have something in common…
I mean with retirment becoming unavailable option unless you have generational wealth… how is anyone really surprised that both women and men are not interested in having babies in the very best times of their lives.
You cannot have capitalistic society that thrives on continuousoutput/value being provided and in the same time have hope for much more socialistic tendencies that allow people to pursue decisions without worrying about their own welfare.
I already have to help my Parents. Which i don’t mind, I am lucky to have great parents. But that still takes time and money.
As society we are much more aware of future prospects….unlike older generations that had restricted access to information. Women are more educated and capable of making smarter and more reasonable decisions.
The system we created is not a system that promotes making babies, creating families etc…. It promotes making businesses, and honestly it’s great to see that more and more women are allowed to partake in this system.
As how to fix it… well I wish them goodluck. Pretty much all major political parties in Europe still haven’t figure out that you can’t use Capitalistic approach and start paying extra money so women choose to have more kids. Having children is not about getting extra few hundred Euro from a government, but what do I know. I am not a woman so no one is tempting me with “cash prize” for getting pregnant.

Childcare has been taken over by private equity and is now madly expensive for parents!
Fertility rate didn’t go anywhere. Birthrate did. Learn the difference please, it’s important
If people can’t afford a house to raise a family in and are living in a one bedroom apartment or with their parents they aren’t keen on starting a family.
*shocker*
If you’ve actually managed to find a home to raise a family in (maybe even without selling a kidney) because you both work 40 hours a week in a decent job and then have that kid then CONGRATULATIONS: Childcare is *crazy* expensive, I’m talking close to or over 11 euros per kid per hour with a minimum purchase of 10 hours per kid per day. No half days anymore either. Childcare benefits ramp down fast for double income full time workers. Which on the surface seems fair if you have a higher than average income, but your house is also crazy expensive *because housing crisis* so you actually can’t afford it. So you don’t have that second kid because you prefer to have the first one not starve or freeze or whatever to pay for 2 kids in daycare.
I’m absolutely shocked that the demographic group unable to buy a house, or can barely even afford rent, can’t afford to have children in a world that’s going to be wrecked by climate change.
I have to pay high taxes for pensioners, high taxes for the unemployed and sick, I can’t afford a house, a 30-year mortgage gets no more than a small 1-person studio, rent goes up every year. I earn too much to get any welfare support, but too little to move on with my life. Work is a complete drag of endless office drudgery. I don’t have the energy to date or get a girlfriend. And it I did, there is absolutely no money or living space left for children. Society can go fuck itself and collapse.
The bill for my 2 kids daycare is almost €5000 before subsidies and around €2200 after subsidies. They’re increasing prices by 11% next year. We spent our 20s earning poorly because of austerity, finally had a small window where we felt financially stable enough in our early 30s to start having kids and then were hit with inflation. Why would anyone start a family now.
Funny how the focus is always on women when it comes to fertility rate. Never a mention of the men who don’t want to have kids.
Almost like the cost of living is too high. Dunno what I’d do without cheap housing due to work and I get over average wage.
People have been priced out of the baby having game!
yet the population keeps increasing…
Finally capitalism eating itself
Let’s be honest here shall we, they are not choosing anything, this country is becoming a shit hole of being overly taxed and prices are sooring through the roof.
It’s becoming really hard to live normally in this country.
When will the dutch start exporting dutch brides? Asking for a friend from another solar system.
People can’t even find a room to rent here. This is expected.
This is a global problem, we’ve out priced an entire generation, stunted their wages and opportunities, now acting shocked that their policies are destroying the demography of the entire world.
So maybe time to accept Euro and English – to boost immigration from other EU countries?
Same story in every country. People are not going to have kids if those children have a worse childhood then they had.
I’m curious how the gypsies and Muslims in my city all have at least two kids? How do they afford it? (assume that they don’t do illegal things)
Why is the birth rate anchored to the female population ? Why not have a birth rate that shows us natalist trends amongst men too ?
Some women don’t have kids because they can’t afford it, but equally some are quite wealthy and could afford it, but don’t want the stress/inconvenience of childbearing, also having kids would make their life a lot more insecure financially
Also gender roles and career expectations. Women are more career orientated now, complain about childcare being too expensive, historically most people didn’t pay for childcare, a woman would just leave the workplace upon having kids. But there doesn’t seem to be a mechanism to allow a woman to take a decade out of a career and then pick it up again. Also another reason women/men had kids because htey needed someone to take care of the family business, provide for them in old age. Fewer people work in family enterprises now, and in a western country there is not really a need for a child to look after a parent. These factors really explain the fall in births.
Only the left can fix this. Yet the right will continue to wing in politics in Europe for the next decade
This is the true giant crisis facing Europe, not immigration.
Lol yeah day care is like €1.5k a month in Amsterdam and an average 3 bedroom house is like €700-800k so how do you suggest people start raising kids 😂 all crammed in a 1 bed flat and take the kids to work during the day? Millennials most definitely can’t afford it by and large in the cities.
