How colonial powers presented people in ‘human zoos’

  1. In Denmark they had women and children from Iceland, Faero Islands, Inuits and Danish West Indies on display in the amusement park.

The most well known is Victor Cornelins and Alberta Viola Roberts, two black children from St. Croix who were just 7 and 4 years old and sent to Denmark to be displayed at a colonial exhibition in a fucking cage.

Victor stayed in Denmark, became a teacher and died in 1985. Alberta died of tubercolosis at age 15 in Denmark

  2. Note: Sometimes these were paid “actors”. Not that it isn’t dehumanizing but they didn’t necessarily just go down to Africa, grab a few slaves, and put them in cages for people to see.
