  1. Either The Magic Faraway Tree or The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark.

  2. How is this even a question? It’s obviously the very hungry caterpillar fam.

  3. Also where is Miss Spiders Tea Party mate? I dressed as her for book day…

  4. Always loved “The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch”. Those pesky seaguls got their comeuppance in the end!

  5. The Puddle Lane series was good, with the Iron Boy and the Sandalwood Girl. I think it’s what unlocked my love of fantasy fiction.

  6. “The Jolly Postman” by Janet & Allan Ahlberg. I think there’s a Christmas version too. If I remember correctly, each other page had a pocket envelope with a physical letter tucked in it for you to read.

  7. The Jolly Postman!!!

They do a Christmas version too.

  8. Where The Wild Things Are

I still have a copy that my late Mum bought for my daughter when she was a kid!

  9. ‘No, No, Charlie Rascal” when I was little and then The Secret Garden when I was a bit older

  10. We’re going on a bear hunt

    Percy the Park Keeper

    Kipper

    The Animals of Farthing Wood

These were the ones that got a lot of wear when I was growing up.

  11. I remember all the books of my era, but can’t remember reading them or which ones I liked at all.

I had the 80s popup hulk book..?

  12. If we’re talking picture books then Each Peach Pear Plum and the Avocado Baby. Also The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch and how could I forget the Mog books?

  13. Fantastic Mr Fox. Was obsessed with the farmers and must have read it 100 times. Absolutely hated the Wes Anderson version which was nothing like the version in my head.

  14. The trouble with mum by Babette Cole

    Matilda by Roald Dahl

  15. I remember “Not now, Bernard!” Vividly from school, but no one else I know has even heard of it

  16. Mr Men, specifically Mr Bump was my favourite.

Honourable mentions to Goosebumps, Funnybones, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Roald Dahl.

  17. I loved the Garden Gang when I was first reading, and later on, I got into the Famous Five and Secret Seven, though I think those books would be considered problematic now. By junior school, I liked The Worst Witch, Sweet Valley High, and the Point Horror books.

These days, one of the few reasons I regret not having kids is the children’s books written authors like Neil Gaiman. They are so good, and don’t talk down to their audience. My cousin’s kid gets Terry Pratchett books from my brother and Neil Gaiman from me, we are waiting with baired breath for when his parents say it’s OK to get him “Good Omens”. He’s only 6, so it will be a while.

  18. Definitely hungry caterpillar.

I never read We’re Going on a Bear Hunt as a child, and I think it is shit now I have to read it to mine.
