In Bulgaria we have this Christian custom to put up posters of recently passed people, or for commemorating them, on their house/apartment doors, or sometimes even around the whole block

  1. We do the same, but without photos, it’s just text.

I doubt is christian, is just for people to go to the funeral parlour to express condolences to the family

  2. The amount of recently passed people living in just this one apartment block (if I understand you correct) is very unsettling

  3. Actually, they tried to ban this because people are putting these everywhere. I really find it stupid because it makes smaller towns to looks like cemeteries.

  4. Same in Poland. Here it’s called klepsydra or nekrolog. Those words are equal to obituary notice. They are put on enterance doors of block and on notice boards near graveyard. They have information who passed as well as when and where is going to be buried.

  5. Quite often this kind of traditions express respect for the deceased but also had a practical purpose in the past, like letting relatives know that someone is deceased, or remove them from the land taxes.

Does it has or had any practical purpose?

  6. Walking around both Plovdiv and Sofia couple years ago I was truly amazed by the amount of obituary papers plastered everywhere. It felt so eerie.

  7. I live there, depressing sight to be honest. They last for few years, some of them even are laminated so you see this every day. It’s very disrespectful to tare ‘em down also..no salvation from this
