Did really George V use “England” instead of “United Kingdom”?
Wilhelm was a fucking idiot and there was no grown-up in the German government to babysit him and to counter the wet dream of a bunch of militarists.
Germany and Britain were the only powers without clear war goals: the French wanted Alsace-Lorraine, the Russians the dominance over the Balkans and Poland and even the Turks probably had plans to recover their lost land, the hegemony over Arabia and the Aegean Sea.
It was fundamentally against the German interest to get involved in a war with France and Russia because of the Austrians not knowing when to stop with their retaliation against Serbia.
