Principal ‘frantically’ looking for substitutes as almost half his teachers out due to Covid ahead of Thursday’s reopening

  1. The INTO said 15% of teachers could be off with covid. That’s an incredibly high rate of infection for just one profession to incur over the holiday period. Maybe the remaining teachers are safer in the classrooms than they are at home.

  2. Our Taoiseach apparently said this morning, that there was no issues with finding substitute teachers. 🙂

  3. I’ve no doubt it will be a nightmare but it’s the right thing to do.

There have been business owners up and down the country with the same staffing issues. Hopefully this peaks over the next week and we’ll have weathered this storm without falling back to lockdowns.

  4. It’s not a case of opening if you are down staff like a pub. If you haven’t a sub you have reduced supervision and increased accidents and incidents and claims. Even before Covid.

The govt is gambling that people will keep kids at home, that reduced isolation times and Omicron peaking will get things over the line. They’ve gambled before a few times and lost. Rolling the dice one more time.

  5. Yes and their isolation period is now 5 days right? So they’ll be back to work Monday morning. This argument holds very little water

Edit: looks like the teachers are out with their downvotes

  6. I’ll teach a class, “what experience do you have?”, I hear you say. Well, I went to the school of hard knocks. Nick Knocks and Ding dongs to be precise. Yup, me and the boys would terrorise the neighbourhood every day, after dinner. Families would sit waiting in horrid fear for the door bell to ring. “Is someone at the door or is it those little bastards again?” they probably said to themselves. Anyway I’ll see myself out.

  7. They say if they if there’s shortages of staff they’ll get student teachers or retired teachers.

Imagine doing your leaving cert and being taught by someone a year or two older than you with no experience teaching, or a cognitively declining, senile retired teacher who probably won’t remember what they’re supposed to do, educating the next generation of the country they’re not going to be alive to see in 10 years.

Thank fuck I’m not a student anywhere, this shit is a total mess.

  8. As a 19 year old primary teaching student who literally has 0 teaching experience, I have been emailed by 3 different schools in my area asking me to sub Thursday and Friday.

    It’s wild!

  9. Plenty came back from maternity leave the week before Xmas so they can keep payments. There will be no sign of them tomorrow.

  10. Just had news that a friend’s (who is also a teacher) little brother is going to be a substitute tomorrow.

He’s in second year of college.

  11. I guess underpaying them all and most leaving the country prior to covid is starting to have its effect…

  12. This is gonna be like last year when they were getting student nurses working in hospitals except now it’ll be student teachers working in classrooms.
