I too say that about their previous policy!
But hey look, I get it. It was a good thought that Russia could be bound by the ties of global finance firmly enough not to go too far. It was correct to assess that Putin would have to be insane to break that. It was, and remains, an insane thing for Russia to have done.
It’s just that it being insanely self-destructive to the point of national suicide doesn’t stop people like Putin. And Russia turns out not to have enough people who can stop him.
Hopefully we can all look at whatever our assumptions were and say, hey, this or that was a mistake, let’s learn from that and work together on what’s next.
The current policy of escalation management is also a mistake.
