  1. I hate it when the title contains something like “key city”…

  2. I hope this costs Russia dearly, West must send more supplies quickly.

  3. >the key frontline city of Avdiivka

    Lol.

Russia is really stooping low when it comes to the orders of the Supreme Commander and its definition of “key” these days.

Kyiv was the “key city” first. And the orders were to take it within 3 days.

Then Odesa was the “key city.” Or Kharkiv (population ½ of Kyiv). Soon, the high command assured the Supreme Commander, these key cities would be taken. In a matter of months.

Not quite as significant as Kyiv, definitely a downgrade, but okay.

In any case… those didn’t work out. Ewps.

Then it was holding the “key city” of Kherson (population ⅕ of Kharkiv). A definite step down. That didn’t work very well. Then, taking the “key city” of Bakhmut (population ¼ of Kherson) was going to turn the tide of the war and unlock the entire front.

    Well that didn’t unlock dick.

In fact, Russia has been fighting this entire time just to finish the job and drive Ukraine out from their last remaining toehold in the city — “city” we call it except it’s more like a small town — while Ukraine continues to pummel Russia from advantageous positions around the trap Russia has put itself into.

If ISW is to be believed, it seems that Russia has finally finished taking all of the territory within Bakhmut’s statutory limits. Just in the last few weeks. Still nothing unlocked though.

Now we’re on to the “key city” of Avdiivka, population ½ of Bakhmut, first by spring, then by October, now by March. And I have to ask. How many keys are there to Russia’s invasion, and how much smaller are they going to get?

By March, what will Russia’s new key goals be?

Overrun the “key city” of the Ukrainian women’s field hockey national team clubhouse, population 12? (I’d like to see them try, field hockey is tough and high-sticking doesn’t violate the Geneva Conventions.)

  4. Very “Soviet” way of thinking. It is a war of attrition and they think taking one small city is more important than losing 150,000 men and thousands of pieces of major equipment.

Yes, they have not loss that much yet, but are well on the way.

  5. Makes no sense. The election is rigged anyway. At best, he’s trying to save face with the families of the deceased

  6. Russia has only been attempting to take Avdiivka since 2014. LOL

  7. Right.

So – at this pace of capturing one border town a year costing 50,000 men each….they’ll reach the Dnipro river by 2245. But – every Russian would be dead by then, so….great plan.

  8. Putin doesn’t need a victory to win a election. He is a dictator and the whole system is rigged.

The whole Russian strategy is pretty obvious. Throw prisoners and conscripts from poor regions at Ukraine lines to burn up their resources so that Ukraine can’t counterattack due to diminished resources. Hold the war in a stalemate long enough for the West to lose interest and then force a peace that is favorable to Russia on Ukraine.

Yeah Russia is loosing thousands and thousands of men but these are “low value” men. The prisoners especially are a bonus they are dead, almost a win win scenario for Russian government. It’s a very cold and cruel tactic.
