Trying to research a bit about Sami reindeer in preparation for an art piece I’ll be creating of the reindeer in traditional harness’s etc.
It’s really difficult to find images of them though! Often times articles will refer to Sami folks as reindeer herders, but I’d like to know more about that, and also about when/why reindeer might wear these harnesses, and any examples of traditional styles.
This image above is from a blog post talking about an exhibition about Sami people in the arctic university museum of Oslo.
I can see in the image above a few colours used, and the style of the harness attaching to the sled at the base of the rib cage. Do these colours have significance? The patterns? Lots of questions!
