Reupload since mods deleted the original post for not citing the source. Here is where the data is from: https://today.yougov.com/ratings/travel/popularity/countries/all

Apologies for not making the source clearer the first time

  1. So this is heavily dependent on how much Americans actually know about each country? 0% can be both indifference and lack of knowledge.

  2. Most of the Americans dont even know the names of the European countries.

  3. “How the US views Europe”

I can tell you how – they think Europe is a country in Asia

  4. We should cut the internet cable that goes under the atlantic

  5. >2021 was two years ago. Lots have changed since then.

Repost since the last one, and the title is still not changed to “how the US viewed Europe in 2021”

  6. Coincidentally, the exact same map is featured as «European countries US Americans can name»
The causal link or links between these two are matter of ongoing debate and research. /s

  7. 72% of Americans have a positive view of the UK (4th highest)

But only 52% of Brits have a positive view of the US (29th highest)

    Checks out lol

  8. I’m surprised that Italy is so high. How so? It’s economy and government haven’t always been too great. Is it simply because this is one of the “well known” countries, meaning they’ll always be favored together with France, UK, Scandinavia etc?

  9. Italy numba one numba one! 💪🤌

It pays to have so many plastic Italians across the pond ahah

  10. and now lets make a chart of how many in the US can actually find Lichtenstein on that map. prediction: -92%

  11. I would think France and Germany would be higher than this tbh, why isn’t it?

  12. Why do the Americans like sweden more than norway???😤😤😤

  13. For context, the data used in this map is *heavily* suspect.

The original data is no longer available, but just for example: the UK in the data source has always hung around 85% positive to 5% negative. On this map, it’s listed as 56% and eight countries are shown as more positive than it. In the data, the UK is the most positively viewed foreign country. I have no idea how OP is torturing 85%/5% into becoming 56%.

According to OP’s methodology of “difference between % of Americans with +ve and -ve,” the UK should come out to around 89%.

For those concerned about how many Americans actually recognize the countries shown, only six countries on this map (aside from microstates) are below 80% familiarity with the current data. Belarus (78%), Moldova (71%), Montenegro (79%), Liechtenstein (72%), Tunisia (77%), and Azerbaijan (67%). The majority of countries are above 90%.

The source does differentiate between people who have heard of these countries and who actually has an opinion about them.

  14. I’m genuinely surprised it’s that high in the UK and Ireland lol. Same for Norway actually, most of our views here of Americans are either annoying tourists or rapist soldiers.

  15. Since there were some surprised reactions about the low score of Czech Republic, it is worth reminding that Czechs are still disliked and distrusted in USA for that time when [they bombed USA a few years ago](https://www.rferl.org/a/boston-chechen-czech-twitter-marathon-bombing-suspects/24963035.html).

[Here, a top CIA analyst and a renowned, popular, respected US reporter and expert commentator in global affairs, discuss the Czech Islamic Republic, and mention how one of the attackers was even named in the honour of the Czech president](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6RvSTiM3Yk).

  16. Bold to assume the average US citizen being able to discern Sweden from Switzerland.

  17. Anything between 5-25 is “idk what that is range” for anyone who was wondering. Higher or lower than that means they know of it at minimum to have an opinion

  18. No way is this correct evey poll puts UK way higher than 56%.

  19. Slovenia and Slovakia should have identical scores. I don’t think anyone in the US knows the difference.

  20. All these Americans thinking they are Italian or Irish while being German 👀🤣

  21. Proud Iranian 🖕 (the lowest % visible on the map)

  22. Glad my country is not popular. Less westerners knows about us, the better.

  23. Yeah, CNN keeps publishing about 2 articles per week about random Americans who found their “dream house” somewhere in Italy…

  24. Austria is high because people confuse it with Australia, I guarantee it.

  25. Proud to finally be more attractive than France in Germany. Not too long ago Americans counted Europe by “France, Italy, the rest of Europe”

  26. lets be honest, most americans don’t even know anything about europe.

  27. I’d love to see the same for net positive sentiments of the US by European countries. Would we see any green at all?

  28. Portugal doesn’t have the same stats as eastern europe? Dissapointing
