The graffiti has appeared on the shutters of the former shoe shop in South Belfast

Racist graffiti that has appeared on a former shoe shop in Belfast has been condemned.

The graffiti, which appeared overnight on the [**former Reids Shoes store on Sandy Row**](https://www.belfastlive.co.uk/all-about/sandy-row), calls for “local housing” and businesses for “local people”, with other references saying “Go home, our country” and “it’s ok to be white”.

Speaking to Belfast Live, one local resident said that the graffiti had caused “a wave of concern” in the community and that it was a “reprehensible act”.

The graffiti has been reported to the [**police who have started an investigation** ](https://www.belfastlive.co.uk/all-about/psni)into the incident which is being treated as a hate crime.

It is understood that the graffiti was written some time between 1am and 2am on Friday, December 8.

[**Chief Inspector Alan Lowry**](https://www.belfastlive.co.uk/all-about/psni) said: “We are threating this matter as a hate crime.
