A machine gun position like that would be far back from the front line. Machine guns were used as area suppression weapons rather than directly aimed at the enemy.
If it really was a reasonably close-quarters attack (i.e., within granade-throwing distance), I doubt a photographer would be standing there with his camera and tripod, taking a pretty picture.
Striking to me how much these pictures look like the trenches in Ukraine.
