Just get rid of religion class teach a guide to taxation, or driving theory or personal finance or anything that’s of use
I’m over 20 years out of the school system at this stage, so basically I haven’t a clue…. but…. Isn’t it taught as religious education these days? rather than just a single denominational Catholic recruitment ground?
Don’t they even have exams with religious studies as a subject covering the beliefs and worships of multiple religions? Or am I misunderstanding something.
Move religion class to an after school activity.
Those who are serious about practicing their faith will of course make sure their children attend and the regular schoolday can be used to teach useful subjects instead.
Religion class was always sound, do a bit of singing, listen to some music was alright enough
and then in secondary you might get to watch some films during it, not a bad deal really
Remove religion from education completely. We have priests straight out of the seminary sitting on appointment boards of schools in this country. It’s medieval.
Should an organization which has ADMITTED to systematically covering up child abuse really be present in almost every school in the country?
When I was in 6th year in 2014 the honours maths students got to do extra maths classes instead of religion.
Two options:
1 – Make religion the last class of the day and make it optional. That way only the small minority of kids who are genuinely religious or interested in religion can go, and the rest can go home.
2 – Get it out of the school system altogether. Leave it to the churches to organise their own thing to “educate”.
In secondary school we didn’t have religion as an exam, but it was a subject for 2 classes a week. It was utterly pointless, but we had to go. One year the schedule ended up with the last 2 classes of the day, and every week I used to get a note from my mother insisting I leave early due to a dentist, doctor appointment etc. Anything to avoid going. I was eventually pulled up on it. To make matters worse, the teacher was an American and she never stopped yapping about the States.
It definitely needs to be optional.
My primary school did religion as an after school activity so most people never went. Can’t imagine being dragged back to school for that stuff.
Was a bit of a shock doing it as a core subject in secondary school, but doing it for the leaving cert was quite handy points-wise.
Reminds me of primary school when I was forced to participate in religion and prayers just because I didn’t follow another religion. My French Mum wasn’t too happy about that
I was raised a Jehovah’s Witness. Was always allowed leave along with the other kids that weren’t being indoctrinated into catholicism (We had already been indoctrinated into our own religions, didn’t need another one added).
It was great, used to get homework done etc.
Now left religion behind thank christ but if my kids were in national school I’d want them out of it as well.
Who will be responsible for supervising the children when they leave class?
Yes and spare children the tramua of aliveos cringe songs
About fucking time, the amount of shit I got from saying I didn’t believe any of this crap and wanted to study something else useful.
Why do schools have religion class at all? Are these schools receiving funding from tax payers?
My daughter will be going to school in a little over a year and the lack of non-religious coed schools in Ireland is troubling.
Wish that had been the case when I was at school. Had to sit through some right shite ! Haha
Is it still Catholic class dressed up as religion? I’d have no issue with them teaching the history or religion in a religion class but if it’s still exclusively Catholic doctrine then it needs to change. Either call it what it is, a Catholic indoctrination or teach proper religion.
But I do also agree that students and parents should absolutely have the right to leave that class out if they so choose.
Personally, I loved religion class. It was the pisstake class. Both in behaviour terms and subject matter. Thank fuck our 6th year religion teacher was sound cos a few of the class absolutely ripped the shit out of his god and religion.
Lets just secularise all schools, keep religion the fuck outta it. Let people educate and practice their faith after school in private.
We need an Irish version of Lacite.
I actually in 3rd got put out of relgion class permanently by choice and it was fucking great , i had time to do homework and study for subjects that mattered.
Don’t kids in educate together learn about all world religions and atheism.
Why would they need to leave the class?
Suddenly all kids become Atheist
Saying as a practising catholic, absolutely it should be removed from primary. Teach a general understanding of world religions or something instead. I have no problem teaching the catechism/enrolling my child into religious prep for communion. I say this because the primary religious curriculum is so watered down from actual Catholicism that unless you do extra education, you actually come out with a minimal understanding of the religion.
Religion class should be a study of different religions/backgrounds to prevent ignorance.
My religion class in school we always watched The Wind that Shakes the Barely. Barely ever learned any religion. But it was still called Religion class. Needs to change
When I was 6th class, we were no religious. Used to be locked in a room to draw art for the church. It was great at the time but looking back probably wasn’t the best. Things definitely haven’t changed sadly.
