For those curious the water is the upper resevoir of the Turlough Hill Hydro Electric Power Station Ireland’s only pumped-storage hydroelectricity plant.
If I did not get told where this was I’d be hard pressed to say it was Ireland tbh, looks great and the water there to me looks like a giant ice bath or swimming pool!
Ireland’s biggest battery !
We should really build a few more of these around the country. great for storing energy.
Any ideas what trail is used to access this OP? Have always been meaning to take a hike and have a look. I think they might even do tours of the place in more normal times though only once a month in the summer or similar.
Lovely!
I once worked as a security guard at Turlough Hill. Inside the mountain there is a power station that’s like something out of a James Bond movie. Also parts of the King Arthur movie are filmed on the hills off to the left of the lake. I also worked 12 hour shifts in a tiny caravan minding that film set for a few months many years ago. There is a road going around the whole lake you can drive on which was very scary during windy weather.
