  1. Grim. Wasn’t there a report recently saying you’re much more likely to have a stillbirth or premature baby if you’re in prison? The whole system needs a proper review really so pregnant women can be properly looked after.

  2. That’s just absolutely abhorrent. This isn’t an isolated incident either. Conditions and healthcare for pregnant prisoners really needs reassessing from the ground up. Surely this is a consensus issue where progress can happen fast.

  3. Our entire prison system, for women and men, is entirely unfit for purpose. This particular situation is especially abhorrent.

Unfortunately, there just isn’t the public support, even from somewhere supposedly left wing like r/uk, to increase the funding for rapists and racists.

  4. Janey Starling, co-director of Level Up, who is campaigning for an end to the imprisonment of pregnant women and new mothers, said: “The only way to keep mothers and babies safe in future is to keep them in their communities.”

Hmm this makes me feel weird because I kind of agree with it. At the same time it’s kinda impossible if you are going to let people off with serious crimes because they are pupped.

  5. I worked as a nurse in the prison system briefly a couple of years ago.

The standard of healthcare in general is pitifully poor. It was a profoundly depressing experience.
