Changes in climate are noticeably impacting the Netherlands in nearly every season. This past weekend, I decided to explore whether these changes could be more effectively illustrated through an alternative data visualization technique. I opted to use a heatmap, designed to allow a quick, comprehensive view of how temperatures have shifted over the years.

The heatmap displays monthly deviations from the average temperature of that particular month throughout the last century (1901-2000). While the visualization requires some scrolling when fully zoomed in (which somewhat detracts from the ‘at-a-glance’ objective) it nevertheless provides a clear and insightful representation of climate change. The temperature increase becomes particularly apparent starting from the 1990s.

For additional insights, my website shows another graph and an interactive version of this visualization, offering different perspectives on the data.
