£150,000 starting salaries as firms fight for staff

  1. Certainly an employee market out there. Recruiting for a role recently and 2 out of 3 candidates dropped out mid process due to being offer other roles!

  2. Using a lawyers starting salary at a top firm as the headline is if anything, a bit misleading lol, the majority of the vacancies are in care/retail paying 10% of that figure.

  3. As someone who is looking for a job in the legal sector at the moment, I think a bit of nuance is needed.

Yes, the salaries offered by top (usually US) firms are around the 150K figure. But those positions come with downsides which particularly after the pandemic a lot of people are no longer willing to put up with (long hours, competitive environment, horrible and abusive clients). So most people, including myself, will simply not apply for these jobs because the juice is not worth the squeeze and will look for jobs with better worklife balance. Hence these positions remain unfilled.

I do believe that this is simply part of a wider shift within the legal industry where junior associates are no longer willing to put up with as much simply for the extra cash but it has probably been exacerbated by labour shortage/Brexit and the pandemic.

  4. 150k starting salary but you will be a husk of your former self by the time they are done with you at these places.
