Hi there! I’m moving to Tallinn with my cat and I just wanted to know if any of you pet owners could share some informations/advices!
Besides general information that you might want to share I would also like to know some of your best recommendations for vets and pet stores!
Bonus Question!: When I visited Tallinn last year I noticed that a lot of people take their pets to some stores and on public transportation, is this something frown upon or totally normal?
Thanks!! 😊 👍
Per demand a photo of the cat in question:

As a cat owner i dont rly know what you mean by general info. For pet stores i dont have any recommendations. I buy cat food and stuff from grocery because its cheaper. For vets i would say either homeless pet shelter vet or “animal ambulance” or tiia toomet’s clinic in tallinn. They all seem intelligent in my experience.
Taking pet to transport is normal. Cats are in cages/bags and i usually see people smiling and staring at them. Dogs… depends. If its a good, well behaved, intelligent dog, i dont mind it, and owners are considerate. Usually only this type of dogs visit public transport
PetCity has many stores across Tallinn and they also have groomers and vets in some locations. There are of course many other pet stores across the city as well. Overall most people just prefer to go to the vet nearest to them unless it’s a very specific health issue that requires specialists. Google is your friend here – just look for “loomakliinik” or “loomaarst” for vets and “loomapood” for pet stores.
There are also some 24/7 animal emergency rooms. One being [in Mustamäe](https://loomakiirabi.ee/en/) and one is [here in PetCity](https://www.petcity.ee/teenused/petcity-24h-lemmikute-kiirabi/).
Depending on how long you’re staying since 2015 all cats and dogs must be microchipped (although I’m sure a ton of them still aren’t) and their details inserted in the online register (can be also done by a vet, I’m not sure if the register is in English).
I have both cats and dogs and I generally don’t take them to public indoor places. It’s not as common as in Milan for example where dogs walk around in Zara etc. I would ask beforehand if pets are allowed if you plan on going somewhere indoors.
For public transportation use a pet carrier for travelling with cats.
Cats have to be microchipped and registered in Estonia : https://www.tallinn.ee/eng/pets/Microchipping-and-registration-of-pets.
Otherwise it’s fine to take your cat out for walk/with bag, people would rather be happy than annoyed.
Umm, it’s kinda rude to just barge in here, tell everyone you have a cat, and not have pics. No representation without taxation!

Your cat is like a clone of one of my cats.
The only requirement is that the cat should be registered and microchipped. Also, it is against the regulations to let the cat outside unsupervised, and they tend to be promptly caught and brought to shelters (although not always).
One thing I have to say – vet bills are quite high. If you are used to the prices in Portugal then you can x2 those prices here pretty much. Also, unfortunately not all vets do a good job, you have to find a good one. I don’t want to promote anything on this board, if in trouble hit me up for some recommendations… I have 3 cats, as funny as it is, one of them is from Portugal.
As for taking your cat for a walk, and so on, you can do that. Depends how well your cat behaves on a leash. I would not take cats to shops with food (hygiene issues with cat hair), I would also not take cats to public transportation because some people are allergic to cats and you can really mess up their day. Be considerate of others.
For stores, I recommend ordering as much as possible on something like [zooplus.com](https://zooplus.com) – it is usually 1.5x cheaper than buying it here in a store. They also do free shipping if you order more than 75 euros at once. I get all my food, toys, cat trees, toilets etc from them.
Well, my understanding is that cats do not love very much taken to the stores but like their home and yard. Some travel in their cages in public transport, seen mostly in ferries.
Good cat vets among others are (in Tallinn) one in Õismäe, one in Nõmme, and in Mustamäe. But this is too detailed information and remain here general.
Can’t recommend a store as my cat is on raw meat and patees and any supermarket will do. And all a bit bigger shopping centres have a pet store, but you can get something almost from the smallest shop if not picky.
What a cute kitty!
My mother in law’s cat is not chipped, and it was handled by the vet no questions asked. But it doesn’t stay in Tallinn..
About vet bills-we had surgery and xrays taken it was around 500eur all together. It’s possible to take insurance on cat, IF sells one for ex. But that is costly too..
About best vet – no idea, we just go to the closest one. But there was some sort of 24h clinic as well in Musta
For cat food I personally recommend [https://valgekihv.ee/](https://valgekihv.ee/), especially for wet food. I’ve tried many brands, but my girl’s favourite is this which has also amazing money-quality value: [https://valgekihv.ee/et/konservid-kassidele/591-delicatessen-kanalihaga-konservtoit-kassidele-teraviljavaba-granata-pet.html#/netokaal-400_g.](https://valgekihv.ee/et/konservid-kassidele/591-delicatessen-kanalihaga-konservtoit-kassidele-teraviljavaba-granata-pet.html#/netokaal-400_g) They have a store in Mustamäe but you can also shop online.
As for public places, I’ve never been to a store or public transport with my cat, but we often take walks on a leash and we’ve also visited animal friendly bars (in Tartu, don’t know about Tallinn). It is forbidden to let your pet outside unsupervised, so buying a special backpack is also an option if you want to take her/him to places.
P. S. Amazing cat! Welcome to Estonia!
I buy dry food from Depo hardware store. Applaws is like 12€/2kg if I remember correctly.
