  1. A well argued article. I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest the lawyers will be completely fine though…

  2. Is the answer more complicated than ‘money’? Carter-Fuck have no ethics and will represent whoever pays them the correct amount. They did not miss this because of incompetence on their part, they chose to overlook it out of greed because that is their true business.

  3. There’s a reason one of the areas the UK is still world leading at is legal services. If you have near infinite pockets and need someone to advocate for you no matter how morally dicey it might be, there’s a very experienced firm in London willing to take you on.

What they lack in morals, they more than make up with legal tenacity. Sadly, it turns civil justice, especially, not into the pursuit of fairness and justice but a financial arms race.

  4. Well I know what’s gonna be in the next issue of private eye

  5. It’s happened before and it will happen again. For example

In 1994, retired police inspector Gordon Anglesea successfully sued the Eye and three other media outlets for libel over allegations that he had indecently assaulted under-aged boys in Wrexham in the 1980s. In October 2016, he was convicted of historic sex offences.Hislop said the magazine would not attempt to recover the £80,000 damages awarded to Anglesea, stating: “I can’t help thinking of the witnesses who came forward to assist our case at the time, one of whom later committed suicide telling his wife that he never got over not being believed. Private Eye will not be looking to get our money back from the libel damages. Others have paid a far higher price.”Anglesea died in December 2016, six weeks into a 12-year prison sentence.
